For someone with such 'certainty' you certainly fail to present evidence.

I'm afraid I simply decline to take your word (or the word of them man who wrote the book you mention elsewhere) on faith, as I would if buying a used car.

Tell me how the e-meter does what you claim it does, and make some definite statement about those claims which can be put to a fair test, and promise I will try it out.

Again, I have no experience of Orgone boxes or the Hieronymus machine (a 'radionics' device which, like Dianetics, was supported by John W Campbell, the editor of "Astounding Science Fiction"). However, life's too short to examine them all on the off-chance that there might be something that works in among all the incoherent hand-waving which passes for theory.

If the e-meter 'works' in some way, it's had 60 years for independent researchers to examine it and try to find out why. If it worked, it would revolutionise the world outside Scientology. This has not happened because

a) It doesn't work
b) What it is supposed to do is only comprehensible to people who have accepted Scientology

Show me independent evidence that the e-meter can do something interesting (e.g. not from Scientologists or Scientology fronts) and I promise I will examine it.

If I can find it, I will read it and publish it online.

However, I doubt that a book written by a committed Scientologist will answer my concerns about objectivity and evidence, but rather just provide more unsubstantiated claims.

Explain clearly what it is that the meter does, and show some independent experimental evidence that it does, in fact, do that and will take that seriously.

By the way, to answer your point b), go on the 'net and find a copy of Understanding the E-meter (not written by Hubbard, by the way).

In reply to Joe Howard.

No- my argument is based on the fact that, as far as I can see, there is no mechanism by which a device which is functionally equivalent to my multimeter can do anything other then read skin resistance.

Other people here have reported being able to fake the required needle movements to pass a 'sec check' so I can't see how those other movement could not be produced by manipulation, deliberate or unconscious.

Things happen rapidly because (unlike my multimeter) the e-meter mechanism is undamped, and bounces about like a car without dampers. It should be possible to face a 'trigger event' that makes the needle 'bounce' rapidly without the manipulation having to be equally quick.

Besides - what does a 'theta bop' actually mean - it can't really be defined outside of Scientology.

Before I can take the claims made for the e-meter seriously, someone will have to:

a) Tell what those claims are, without reference to Scientology - what is the e-meter supposed to be indicating
b)Explain how the meter actually achieves what is claimed - if it doesn't read skin resistance what does it do?
c) Propose an objective, falsifiable. test of those claims
d) Explain why my multimeter (which is based on exactly the same circuit) does not display the same properties.

I have no 'experience' with e-meters, or healing crystals, or pyramid power because life's too short to try out every device which lacks any kind of coherent rationale.

Uh, yeah. What I meant by my "experience" crack is that things often happen very rapidly on an e-meter which cannot be accounted for by hands sweating or unsweating. A rise or a fall, sure, that could happen. Body reactions, sure. But a rock slam or theta bop, no freaking way. Not possible. Of course you'd have to look up those definitions to see what I was talking about or else watch the e-meter film done by Jonathan Burke at the Advanced Org of the Great Plains to see what they looked like. I take it that you have zero actual experience with a meter. and that your argument is based strictly on what you have read that others have written, am I correct?
