I remember Phil Zimmermann’s stunt before the Internet and how fast lawmakers made up the rules about DES and AES. They really got busy around this 🙂 I never went down that rabbit hole, as i consider all this spy stuff to be a compulsion to protect something that is not really there!

What i have come to value, more than ever, is the fundamental right to privacy and ownership of the data you produce yourself. That would be my rabbit hole! So i guess i am with you on this one 🙂

Mick, I don’t think that independent auditors will quite be fighting over departing members if there is a big exodus from the CofS, but rather that the few existing indie groups would start to grow, and rival organizations and followings would start to emerge, and it might get ugly as they vied for influence and power.
As to abuses and Hubbard policy, Scientologists are used to being in denial and self-managing cognitive dissonance, or they wouldn’t have lasted long enough in the CofS to have become Hubbard loyalists in the first place. Hubbard himself was good at cultivating the “man’s best friend” humanitarian image while creating plausible deniability for his controlling and abusive policies, so Scientologists were indoctrinated to idealize him and excuse problems they encountered with his organizations, and can still readily find grounds for excusing the abuses.
