By historical accident we have an established Church and no equivalent to the first amendment. There is no special advantage to claiming to be a religion, here. You do get tax concession if you can show some public benefit – but the CofS can be (and was) refused.

The established Church has waned impotent as we have become effectively a secular society, so there is no public support for theocratic campaigns like Scientology vs psychiatry.

If we have any talent in this department it’s knowing when to leave situations like this alone because, although they don’t make sense, and are often anachronistic, they work.
