I said, “it appears to me that Hubbard wasn’t against psychiatry” When I say psychiatry I am using that term to group together the general body of knowledge – the study and treatment of mental health – which preceded Hubbard’s ‘discoveries’ and ‘tech’ – from which he lifted many practices. When I say “He just wanted to run it without education, experience and oversight” I am referring to the individuals and authoritative/governing groups which compose mainstream psychiatric practice. So, not the ideas – the people. Which is what you said.

If you are in fact aware of the stance on psychiatry then you are necessarily aware that both Hubbard, with his paranoid rants, and the Ch*rch of Scientology, with its protest groups, indoctrination of its members, CCHR, DM’s “obliteration of psychiatry on a global scale” proclamations, and “Industry of Death” propaganda, did and do indeed consider psychiatry, as a practice and a profession, and indeed the combined membership of all mental health practitioners, to be the great villain of not just this planet but the entire universe. There are NO aspects of psychiatry which they deem acceptable; all psychiatrists by definition are considered evil, suppressive and a menace to humanity. Scientology wants to wipe them out.

Modalities aren’t the point. This visceral, unalterable antipathy is about not modalities but TURF. LRH ripped off everything in sight including psychiatric literature but not limited to it. But you don’t see the sources of other “tech” being vilified as the great enemy; chiropractors, for example. The mental health profession is the great enemy because it is the great competitor, and competitors, in LRH’s view, must be obliterated.

You are incorrect. I am aware of Hubbard’s and Scientology’s stance on psychiatry. They utilize modalities for their benefit by calling it other names as if that divorces it from what it is. And, of course, they define which aspects of psychiatry are acceptable and which are not such as psychotropic drugs. My original post was to illustrate that I believe how unoriginal and hypocritical and even self deluding Scientology is to present itself as having discovered something new. Just a self serving bastardization which, yes, has caused much suffering.

I’m assuming here that your comment is implying that I am unaware of Hubbard’s and Scientology’s stance on psychiatry. I am aware. This does not mean his/their actions don’t belie his/their words and that this ‘religion’ does not utilize known and common psychiatric modalities. Calling it “tech” doesn’t change what it is.

My understanding is that Hubbard sought psychiatric treatment at one time and there is evidence he partook of psychotropic drugs. Which doesn’t mean he didn’t change his mind. It also doesn’t mean that he didn’t verbally and perhaps even consciously reject psychiatry while sculpting a ‘religion’ utilizing many of its tools. Merriam-Webster defines psychiatry as “a branch of medicine that deals with mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders”. Swap out medicine for religion and disorders for whatever the Scientology word is for problem and (IMO) you have a pretty good statement of what Scientology is supposed to do for an individual. I understand Hubbard’s verbalizations regarding the evilness of psychiatry. I just think he built a bastardized version of it that fed his needs.

I’m curious about DM changing the will? Don’t people file wills with attorneys and have them notarized? It seems like it would be difficult to access and fraudulently create more favorable terms than the deceased intended. Not that I don’t believe it. I do 100%.
