I took a Bible As Literature class in a state university that examined the bible strictly like any other piece of literature.

The professor pointed out that the creation story parallels each human’s birth and development story.
Darkness: in the womb.
Light: coming out of it.
Heavens above and the earth below: discovery of gravity.
Etc.

One of the reasons that the creation story is a successful meme is because it resonates with each person.

It’s the fundamentalists who insist that the bible is true, immutable fact that pile on a bunch of crap and reject other interpretations.

It was centuries before science started to produce evidence that the bible account wasn’t accurate, so it had a lot of time to take hold int he general consciousness.

$cientology doesn’t have that time of existence, nor has it ever existed where there was no evidence to counteract their myth. In addition, they kept that myth from the public and people in the lower levels, so their story hasn’t had a chance to take hold.

The general J&D on the subject of $cientology has infiltrated the consciousness of the general public. Yes, there will still be misguided people that are sucked in, but their numbers are greatly reduced, and there are far more people leaving.

I think that some ideas like that persist because they gather a critical mass of believers and can reproduce themselves, rather than fading away when the fad passes.

Richard Dawkins would characterise such concepts as successful memes (which success is often down to good luck rather than its inherent merits).

One of the really good things about the collapse of Scientology recruitment (which has is now taking a series of serious blows from Leah Remini)is that, with luck, Scientology will never achieve that status, and fade away to the sound of popular mockery.

Hilarious! I had a friend who came up with a sure-fired strategy to get the JWs to never ever return to his neighborhood. He’d see them coming down the block and quickly get naked. When they’d knock, he’d throw open the door and enthusiastically invite them in with the words, “Come on in, there’s plenty of good butt fucking going on here!”

Not sure that I believed him, but I am sure that it would work!
