To (try) to be fair to be politicians, in today’s media-driven discourse they do not dare admit it when they are wrong, because this will be used against them.

The rational way to behave is to acknowledge when you have messed up, explain why you have learned from you mistake and move on. On long as you don’t make a habit of it, of do anything catastrophic, that’s surely the most that anyone can expect from government by human beings.

However, the ridiculously adversarial system the modern world seem to have blundered into prevents anyone admitting they were wrong, ever, and favours those warped individuals who think they are infallible.

It’s pretty clear that Hubbard suffered from a serious personality disorder – a clear diagnosis is actually impossible at this historical remove but, whatever it was, it included:

a) A firm belief that he “has extraordinary ability in most areas” (as a Naval officer who assessed his performance put it)
b) A need for control over others and not so much acknowledgement as adulation
c) A total lack of empathy to to the point of lacking a theory of mind – other people were little more than deployable agents to him, to be used and discarded.

These characteristics gave him a superficial confidence which explains his reported charisma. People fall for those who promise big things and have no doubt that they can deliver.

I know the terminology is rapidly changing but I see Hubbard as a malignant narcissist or traumatic narcissist in the concept Daniel Shaw described in his book.

I must agree. He wanted dominion over the minds of men and bodies of women.

In the affirmations are contradictory statements that suggest some ambiguity. If you go line by line and compare every statement to every prior one it becomes clear.

I think he sought to escape his flaws rather than face them. It’s almost like a pep talk to block out negative ideas from others and reinforce his feelings of invincible confidence and superiority. A mad version perhaps.

He had the traits of a vulnerable narcissist of blaming his failures on others always and attributed to himself exaggerated and nonexistent successes. He wanted credit for things that never occurred.

Not exactly perfect character.
