PS - I agree 100% with you about the director's response... He absolutely minimized what took place! What's odd is that they typically ask pretty probing questions regarding faith/religion and try to match those areas up to avoid things like this. So either they weren't careful in their process or (more likely) since they get far less male volunteers, they made the match anyway. By making this "a simple difference of values" he's setting himself (& more children!) up for a repeat of this issue by not taking it seriously! NOT ok!

In reply to ScnMonkeyNuts.

Thanks so much for the reply! Yeah I agree they SHOULD, I just can see why they are lamely "playing it safe." The DA is likely going "So we are supposed to file assault charges against a CHURCH calling out a specific doctrinal practice as a crime? The press and conservative groups would have a field day, better to do nothing and get slammed for doing that!"

That poor little boy though, and the sad thing is that ridiculous "big brother" just guaranteed that young man will now likely see church and religion as something scary and negative, so in his ridiculous haste to "save a soul" he just alienated, not to mention violated and scared to death, a child for his lifetime.

Yeah as for my niece, one parent is taking it particularly hard and doesn't want "everyone knowing so she's under a label" to which I tried to reply/explain that by "protecting" in that way, she could end up feeling they are ashamed or it's something to keep quiet when it's not. Just as if she had diabetes or any other diagnosis, there's nothing shameful or secretive. Seems that over time some of that is being let go, but I certainly hope by the time she's school age there is no desire to be"quiet" about it, as there are excellent resources and the more confident they are about her having the life she deserves, the more she will know that she doesn't have to be limited by anyone's ignorance or anything.

Thank you for being willing to share your personal story! With my daughter I just wanted to know how to help her and was ok with whatever they find, just wanted to help her talk, because it has her so frustrated. She's doing amazing with the things we've been trying and we've found two incredible programs and a school she's being assessed for now. She's amazing and a fighter, (she was climbing everything by 9mos, just didn't walk until al out 18m) so no matter the final diagnosis, we'll help her find tools & I think she'll pretty much kick arse and take names at whatever she sets her mind to! Lol (edited for wonky spelling)

Hi Jenyfurrrrr, I don’t see how they could not get involved–a vulnerable child was criminally assaulted by an individual that was in a position of trust (and with the tacit collusion of the church in question, too). That the assault was in the form of a full-immersion baptism (which was clearly causing an enormous amount of emotional stress) makes it so much the worse for someone who has difficulty processing the information of their surroundings.I agree that with proper monitoring and guidelines, these mentoring schemes are valuable. However, I find the attitude of the Executive Director, Tim Kehres, very troubling as he seems to imply (or at least, this is how I read it) that he sees no issue with the enforced baptism. I also know for a fact that most autistic people find the whole concept of religion quite unsettling in general (I certainly do), particularly as it can put the person on the spectrum into an environment they ordinarily wouldn’t choose to be in (crowded and noisy synagogue/church/mosque/temple/meeting house/et cetera).I’m pleased that your sons benefitted from having the Big Brothers–and that they were helpful to you when you needed the support. Like you say, the rogues are rare–it is what the Director said that worries me in this case. I also agree that a person’s faith is something that should be found from within, so I don’t think that what you said about the rogue Big is much of a rant! And finally... I’m autistic–the drop-in was for people on the spectrum who are clients of the Autism Support charity. ( http://www.assertbh.org.uk/ ). I’m glad your neice has a diagnosis as, while it can be incredibly difficult for the parents, it can help the child immensely because of greater modern understanding of autism. The other important thing for parents of autistic children to understand is this: It is not their “fault” and they never did anything “wrong”, it’s just the throw of the genetic dice (I’ve had to explain this to my parents!). I’m sorry to hear of you and your daughter’s problems during pregnancy and birth–and am pleased you both made it through :) (I was also a late crawler/walker with late-onset language development too.)Rob

People whose first posts introduce themselves, or make a humorous remark, or whatever, are better received than those whose first post is to dead-agent one of our friends or stir up an old argument-- because plenty of people with secret motives (not so secret really, we know all about them) come here with those kinds of opening posts, all the time, as they have been doing since the beginning (and before, on other boards).
