I didn’t pull the number out of the air. That was the cost of a school built and ready to open 13 years ago, tomorrow. Inflation has been low in that time so I didn’t factor it in. Also, I believe that the land allocation is done in the very early days of the municipality so the board of education does not buy land and the prices of the day.

My guess is that just as the cost of housing has gone way up in Canada, the cost of construction has gone up too. I didn’t factor that in. It could be that just as the cost of my own home has doubled or more of the past thirteen years, so has the cost of building a school though the cost of most things has increased only slightly.

500 people in Chatswood? That says everything. By way of contrast, whenever a new pair of Air Jordan’s are released there are of thousands of people lined up at malls across America. The lines form the night before the stores open in the morning. People start lining up at 10PM and stay all night. Google “crowds for new jordans” and read the stories from across the US.
