I think what is going on with Marty is actually quite simple and quite human. He is being paid a lot of effing money-enough to secure an extremely comfortable life for himself and his family-and to hell with everyone else. Marty is once again an employee of Scientology and turns out to be a very ordinary individual after all.

He likes to be magnanimous when he’s praised and lauded at the level he feels is his due, then turns vicious when the attention turned his way is in the least bit critical.
