In reply to daytoncapri. To clarify, the point I was making is that it isn't a matter of whether it is or is not a religion. It is that it doesn't matter. (And a bad religion is still a religion.)

Local zoning is just that – local. Without local support, out of town developers (and that’s really what they are) rarely win these arguments. The Court can merely decide that the council did not act in an arbitrary manner and the argument is lost. That the Church of Scientology is so clearly trying to get around local zoning laws is enough of an argument against their case.

oh absolutely not disgusted with him!!! just so so sad for him!!! and i’ve read bios where there’s been partying, etc but his seemed to be borne more out of a need of not just ‘partying’ but of deeper psychological needs (which yes i suppose one could say of any drug/alcohol user, but some are just recreational users)…..so he had all this success yet still lacking something—i guess that’s a succinct way of putting it…..and i know that’s true of MANY successful people…..

yes, it IS a brighter end that he got and remains sober…..and his humbleness and gratitude for what he’s been thru, survived, etc shines thru in the book…..

i’m not sure i had a ‘nice’ image of DD….i just wasn’t expecting THAT, ya know? and “lost soul” is an apt description, which i think made me all the sadder….

Recommended listening (albums):
– All You Need Is Now (2010): **A MUST**
– Medazzaland (1997): a bit broody if you’re into that sort of thing; this was the time that JT left the band to straighten up his life so he only contributes to part of the album.
– Paper Gods (2015): a “grower”. An even split among fans with some loving it, others hating it. Lyrics are great, not cryptic like back in the day. Singles “Pressure Off”, “Last Night In The City”, “What Are The Chances”, “The Universe Alone” seem to be the faves among most.
There were other CDs but you can hear them on YouTube and judge them for yourself . Thanks for feeding my Duranie habit. 😉

The brighter end being that he went to rehab (not Narconon!) and got sober. He remains so today. I’ve met him in person a couple of times recently (one of those times was at a book signing of his memoir) and he was pleasant, very humble, humorous. He has a new lease on life and comes across as being more appreciative of it now than he did before. I’m happy for him.
For anyone who fervently clung to the “nice” image of Duran Duran from the 80s, the revelations may understandably come as a shock. But given what that decade was like in terms of rock n’ roll partying, drugs, sex, hijinks and diva drama, JT’s experience is tame in comparison to what others did during those years (think Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe). Still, it wasn’t pretty. I wasn’t disgusted with him after reading his bio…instead, I felt great pity for the lost soul that he clearly was.

The biggest question of all is “Why does the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) continue to recognize the Church of Scientology (COS) as a 501c3 religion for tax exempt purposes. The US Supreme Court said “NO” in 1989.The US Tax Court said “NO” in 1984. The Ninth Circuit Court said “NO” in 2002 and stated that the proper course of action was to file a law suit to force the IRS to comply with the Supreme Court ruling. When the IRS is questioned about that issue, all questions are forwarded to the Exempt Organizations Division (EOD) and over the years the EOD responds by saying “The IRS code includes taxpayer privacy provisions that Congress enacted to protect the privacy of tax return information of all tax payers”. WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR TAXPAYER INFORMATION. WE ARE ASKING THE IRS TO JUSTIFY THEIR GRANTING OF A 501c3 TO THE COS IN VIOLATION OF EVERY HIGH COURT RULING. THAT SOUNDS VERY MUCH LIKE A COS TEACHING WHICH TRAINS PEOPLE TO ‘TELL AND ACCEPTABLE TRUTH” in order to deflect people from continuing to ask questions.
