I also remember joking about History of Man and a friend demonstrating the clams opening and closing to see if it would produce jaw pain (my jaw is beginning to hurt right now– power of suggestion still does it). YES, so true on experiencing mind control rather than reading about it. It is very insidious. A lot of the people when I got in, including myself, were interested in out of body experience, past lives and the information in the History of Man book….. more a spiritual quest. And then the LRH promise of miracles intertwined with all that. There can be a lot of personal chords twanged in the areas of power and attitude, compulsion and inhibition, helping, and who knows what else.

I never crossed paths with those people. You are right in that I didn’t get burned too badly. I have been chased harder upon leaving by car salesmen. I have lost more money to friends who didn’t pay me back. I love the notion that they spent more money sending me junk mail for about forty years than I did taking their stupid courses.

I have long forgiven myself the stupidity that got me involved. In a way I am proud that I got along with the foolish associates that pulled me in and that we are still friends today. I am more cautious. I learned something specific about mind control. You can learn about that from a book too but if you have been exposed to it personally the lesson is far stronger. I think I look at life and myself a little clearer than I would have had I not been involved.

I agree it is hard to suss out inconsistencies when things seem to make sense, especially as a young person. Two people I am very close to are really good at this type of differentiation and yet they too stayed involved for years. The best eye opener for me was reading a book on bullying and now it is easy to recognize the characteristics of sociopathic behavior …. those who lie and lie and, as I figure, believe their own lies.

I didn’t really know the Toronto org guys apart from a couple of DSA people. One, Janet Laveau, was in DSA Vancouver, went to Toronto and I believe is now in the UK. Then were was Cathia Riley and I didn’t know her but I knew her husband Tom and I believe he met her when he was in the UK and they relocated to Toronto. As far as I know she left the SO when the ruling came out that SO members couldn’t be married to non-SO; another one of the control mechanisms that cost the church a lot of their good people.

And life is hugely better away from all that pressure. I am glad that you probably didn’t get singed too badly!
