Thank you Qbird. I did see something amazing in Laura. Vitality, a strong spirit and positiveness. I admired and respected her greatly. I wish we had been closer but in SCN I was never truly close to anyone and I didn’t even realize it. So much of everything was pretense. We were all pretending to be happy and we were all busy convincing ourselves that we were “winning”.
Laura’s death momentarily pierced that veil and I feel now that the superficiality of the service was designed to prevent us from thinking too deeply about what had happened.
It’s more that I ached for a closeness that could have been but under the circumstances impossible.

Actually, the Oscars declare what they are about in plain English. ‘Best.’ This is rarely adhered to. And of all the pro-Oscar posts prior to mine (that I saw anyway), none nor Tony’s interview comments were expecting or hoping for the win due to it being Best (or most courageous, etc). It was purely their dog in a fight. This is the system not working if it translates to actual voters. Which Tony speculates it might.

Only the nominations are as a the result of Documentarians voting. When it’s whittled down its a free for all. Although the attempt to get everyone to see the films begins around now with a barrage of emails offering free showings in LA and NYC.

I’m only guessing, but I think Scientology might struggle to find a clear horse to back. Bias for and against GC aside, it looks like anyone’s game.

Speaking as a film maker who was preparing (I had actually been shooting for quite awhile) a documentary on Scientology that lost its funding when Gibney made his announcement just before Sundance, I have to say that it is precisely the lack of lurid details (no matter how true, and there is certainly no shortage of them) and the solid, simple presentation that mends GIbney’s film its power.

I would have gone much further, and counter-intuitively it would have weakened my film’s impact, not made it better.

Also, you seem to think the Oscars are about amazing film making other than perceived courage, timing,etc… It should also be noted that only Documentary film makers will be voting for the category,and I think they’ve been pretty clear about what they think of Gibney as a film maker.

They also clearly want to make a statement to the world that the Scilons do NOT control Hollywood, and that they are tired of their sneaky, sleazy ways…

The number one problem working against Gibney Oscar-wise is that he has won so many and it is getting bit redundant.

(Look for a lot of Scilon tax-free money going to publicize a certain charming and amazing Palestinian girl’s story and winning appearances.
OF course, they may think twice about using true heroism, pain and purity to achieve their twisted ends, because— BWAAAAHHHHHAAAAAHHHHAAAA!!!! Sorry, I couldn’t quite get it out…)

It was thugs like Petit who made CofS the nightmare that it is. The seeds were sown when Hubbard decided to be soft on abuse but the seeds would not have grown without people like Petit around to coerce and abuse.
