I feel kind of left out, honestly…

Not only who they married, but how wealthy their own families were, which GVW didn’t have to worry about. GVW obviously felt constrained by the ‘gilded cage’ and broke out of it in her own way but always returned and sat on her perch when required.

GVW is totally fascinating. The women’s lives then were so largely defined by who they married (even the property transactions still use only the men’s names!) yet she and many of her friends, accomplished so much. The Little Gloria story captivated me, too. That’s how I had heard of her. Now you must plan a trip one of these years!

the book ‘little gloria happy at last’ got me into GVW and then of course i read the excellent bio on GVW done in cooperation with her granddaughter…..as we know now, kidnapping as the premise of ‘little gloria….’ was sort of correct but not by strangers….i so loved gloria vanderbilt’s books about her life….she’s an incredibly strong woman…..GVW with her duality of character is just truly fascinating and i don’t think she’s given proper credit for all she did for american art…..at the time, and i believe even now, she was dismissed as just a wealthy patron–which yes she was BUT she was also an artist herself and at times allowed herself to live that life, hidden of course, from her wealthy friends……
