In this case, under supervision or not, I think the guy is a “True Believer” who is in the grip of confirmation bias. He seizes on the smallest detail that can be made to serve his case, and ignores any negative evidence. He only notices the information that supports his preconceptions.

He knows that the Earth (or in this case, Scientology) is the centre of the universe, so he does not have to look through the critics telescope.

I know what you mean – the most desperate attempts to rationalise away the obvious are attempts to quell doubts (according to cognitive dissonance theory https://scicrit.wordpress.com/2014/04/30/understanding-the-scientology-mindset-pt-1-cognitive-dissonance/ ) and this seems to be very common.

However, I suspect that this particular guy has passed beyond doubt, and it take a great shock (e.g. being declared) to get him to question his uncritical faith. Perhaps this is why he is trusted to move among us.

Well, it’s not always the case – e.g. the best of David Brin’s “Uplift” series is the second one (“Startide Rising”) and one of his best books – but he elaborated the original premise considerably.

Wasting his own time, A) not having any effect, because he’s primarily discussing peripheral nonsense or setting up straw-men and B) because he won’t allow himself to truly consider what’s being said to him.

I do wonder sometimes if this desire (unless he’s under orders, which is likely I guess) to get out and defend while also not-really-defending-at-all is an echo of internal doubt?

You know, like at the top of the final slope of the failed marriage when you’re saying loudly to all your friends “It’s great, everything’s fine! But I’d rather talk about the weather.”

I wouldn’t be too sure. I haven’t studied theory since I was a kid. I went to music camp a couple of summers. It was mostly for performance, but there were also daily theory classes. Even bonehead theory was way over my head and (not kidding) made me cry.
