I share your fascination but I find I can maintain a kind of detachment as long as I stick to a theoretical approach. When I get into the details of his interactions with other people – specifically his calculated cruelty and (especially) injustice – that’s the stuff that’s difficult to imagine.

Strangely, it’s often relatively minor things that provoke an emotional response. This is probably because (as a never-in) I can understand those offences, and this enables me to imagine the impact of some of his more outrageous behaviour.

It must take some ex-Scientologists a long time to be able to speak of these things without winding themselves up like a mainspring.
