Feeling better?

I know someone who will aggressively attack other people for doing the very things that he is guilty of (and feeling insecure about). His principle seems to be ‘get your retaliation in first’.

Sometimes, his arguments are so desperate as to become tragi-comic , and reveal more about his own insecurities than anything else. However, people know him. They roll their eyes and take little notice.

When Hubbard did the same thing, however, the cult of personality he had created and his isolation protected him from being found out (the overwhelming majority of Scientologists never saw him let alone met him).

It’s interesting that so many of the ex-Scientologists who met and worked with Hubbard speak about how they struggled with the disparity between the way in which the man was presented, and the way he actually was. If he had just been an acquaintance with a taste for tall stories -if they had known the man and not the myth – they would have written him off years ago.

Shortly after he created Scientology, Hubbard withdrew from personal interaction with the majority of his followers. It was at this point where the oppressive social situation created by the doctrines and practices of Scientology took on a life of its own.

In the early days, Dianetics and Scientology was driven by Hubbard’s personality disorder. Later, the organisation he created began to behave like him. He could then play with being an English country Squire at Saint Hill, and a ‘Commodore’ at sea and leave it to its own devices. Ultimately, he lost all contact with humanity, and was consumed by his own creation, dying in suspicious circumstances.

My best cousin and I were just discussing those situations where you crack up at the most inappropriate of times, those are the best. Once we were at a funeral and I started doing fancy napkin folds (both waitresses at the time) with my Kleenex. For some reason this was so hilarious that we could not contain ourselves and had to leave.
The other time is just as stupid and won’t translate on a message board, but makes me laugh every time I think of it.
Your story reminded me of those days. Thank you for making me smile 🙂
