I think he was given the wrong numbers to input into the plane. Reminds me of the(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_New_Zealand_Flight_901 DC-10), which was new at the time and crashed into the Artic on sight seeing cruise. You have to remember that this was a completely different way of flying and it required the input of the correct numbers especially to try an odd move like that. The L-!011, was a very safe aircraft but it had all sorts of redundancy systems. Pilot error was the only thing that ever caused one to crash. Airbus, was in a hurry to make a name for itself and trying these silly things is usually when you start to have a chain of events that cause a plane to crash. Embarrassed enough I think that airbus(Scarebus) did everything they could to truly figure out what happened. First you have a pilot who had never tried anything as strange as this and then he was given the wrong input numbers to fly by. Lucky, anybody survived. Suprisingly, Pan Am was one of the first to get a great deal on these wide body aircraft and needed them badly to save fuel. I think the French made a mistake and though it has been mired in controversy, it wouldn't be the fist time. Had a coverup been found out that would have been the end of Airbus so I guess it could be either way.
I was coming back from Vegas last month and sat next to a flight attendant. We were in the second row and it was fun to talk about all the different types of aircrafts, old airlines..Her boyfriend had come over to United to Pan Am and we talked about that for awhile. I then asked her which she preferred, Boeing or Airbus? Without thinking or blinking she said,"I prefer Boeing aircraft." Well this woman seated in the front row of first turned around and gave the flight attendant and I an ugly stare. We were on an United Airbus A320. LoL.

i loved your reply and i have a lot to comment about it, but you forgot to answer my question about the airbus a320 crash - pilot Asseline. He tried all these other things to prove his innocence, but everything was disproven except the black box switch. That was verified to have happened, so what do you think?

Hi, So sorry to hear about your hand. Gosh, I sure know how those things can hurt. Seems that the older I get the longer it takes to heal, too. I have these big dogs and I'm so thankful to have my nephew help me or I don't know what I would have done over the years. Ugh!. I read Skygods, a long time ago but I think it gets its point across. They were the first to do it all and they wrecked more aircraft than any others had at the time. What made it interesting to me was how much you were not able to question the pilot. If you look at that fact alone then we would have never had the larger accidents like the two 747's in Tenerife. Capt. Vanzantan had to go and him being a,"skygod" everybody on that plane was afraid of him. It explains all too many accidents. Pan Am, was the flag carrier of the United States, an International symbol that all over the world was recognized more than the symbol of Coke a cola. Growing up I never imagined that I would join the elite jet set in my early 20's and go all over the world. Politically, the book showed that politicians in Texas didn't like Pan Am and I'm sure you got several examples of how they were forced to pay more than everybody else for numerous things. In their lifetime they owned over 73 jumbo jets(Not at once), which would just crush them during oil crisis's which happened too many times.
Most importantly they were the first to try it all. There were no airports back then so they made their planes into boats. Also, they were the first to address the Skygod syndrome and try to correct it. I thought you might enjoy the history of it. Even towards the end when I flew PanAm it gave you a certain mystique as a person who traveled the world. As I mentioned sometimes I'd get on those 747's and they'd be maybe 7% full out of Seattle to London. Also, it has been said that without their aircraft many Generals said we would have lost the war. It has been so long since I read it but it really came down to them not having friend's in DC.
One of my favorite stories was http://blog.nasm.si.edu/aviation/december-7-1941-and-the-first-around-the-world-commercial-flight/. Can you imagine being in the middle of the desert with your camel and suddenly this big noisy flying boat comes over the horizon? Must have scared many people.http://blog.nasm.si.edu/aviation/december-7-1941-and-the-first-around-the-world-commercial-flight/ Who would have thought later that the Japanese attack on the other flying boat would have started a trend against the US. Later to play itself out in numerous hijacking, planes being blown up on the ground and lastly, over Scotland.
I kept a journal which has since been lost but I was going to write a book about my exciting youth one day. I was in Madrid, and met this Brazilian model. I ended up spending the night with them and in the morning went to check in for a flight back to JFK. I told the person behind the desk that I'd already flown over 60 thousand miles that year and that,"I'd done my time in coach." She stared into the screen and said she could see that but it hadn't clicked in yet. She went over and got her supervisor and he said he'd think about it and meet me at the gate. Sure enough, he was waiting there with a new boarding pass and I was upgraded to First class. In First class you got a bed to sleep in and 7 course meals. Internationally, I've never gone back. I had truly done my time in coach.
I wish you would have liked it more. I can't remember if it went into detail about all the First things they had done. As I mentioned I had also learned how to fly free after that and be upgraded. The world was my oyster and sky was the limit! Gotta run to a meeting.

Hey, sorry u no hear from me. my thumb in a splint and so i have to peck type. i been indulging in the air disaster stuff. recently i took apart the air france a320 crash at an airshow fly over. if u don't mind, i'd like to ask your opinion... do u think it was a cover up? i'm tending to lean toward the conspiracists lol, since it was proven in court that the black box was not the same black box in the plane. what about you?

i read sky gods but to be honest, it was focused on the business side of things and that's just not my cup of tea lol. otherwise, i can see it is a really good book for people who love that kind of stuff. i already was kind of familiar about how the pilot life is not as glamorous as it seems, and that sometimes, or actually many times, pilots have brutal schedules and low pay. i have to say, the pan am pilot sky gods got slung back to earth in enumerous gut punching blows. wow.

so now i'm reading one of the air disaster books. i'm bunker clueless right now but i know if anything big happens i'll get email notification.

im looking forward to checking out the second 2nd link u gave me. thanks.
