Are you saying your ancestors where of the first settlers. How on earth did you find that out? I would be unable to trace back further than 1870. I know some of my family were from Lithuania but emigrated to South Africa in about 1850. On the other side Romania having emigrated to the uk in early 1900. That's it.
Re the red square. It was impressive, but it left me cold. but I still fell in love with st Petersburg. I felt it was like a beautiful elderly and now impoverished dowager whose beauty had faded but could still be seen through the veil of age and poverty. I would love to go back in July. I visited in April and some of the summer palaces were closed.
I am lucky I live right next to a park. It is amazing to find so much greenery in a huge city.

The telling was my pleasure. While there, I learned a great deal. Specifically that the average Russian was warm and welcoming. I also learned that what had always been described in the media at that time as "the grey, forbidding walls of the Kremlin" were very old red brick around a huge building with bright green, yellow and white paint! What a jolt...and a clear lesson regarding how the media twists things at times.

I've visited London several times and its beautiful in many areas. I've loved walking around the main part of the city, especially the parks. I usually have gone up to the Peterborough area where a dear friend resided. (He's now near Rutland Waters.) Sooner or later, I'm planning to go up to Kings Lynn where my ancestors lived and emigrated from in 1628 to America. One of the local churches, I'm told, has a wall plaque with our family name inscribed.

Really interesting. In London they were also used as shelters during WW2, in fact one received a direct hit and was simply closed down. I don't know if you have ever visited our fair city, but the under grounds are fairly grotty. I cannot tell you how excited I am to see Tony & John S in London. Thank you for telling me the things about Russia.
