ago, I gave the below letter (in Spanish) to my next-door-neighbors
because they can’t speak English at all. Their children can, but I
didn’t want to have to go through their children.

So now I need to send them another similar letter, but I used Google translator to do the one I did before, so I wanted to make sure it said what I meant it to say, and not something by mistake like I’m telling them to jump off a cliff or something lol.

So if you could please just tell me if it is coherent and then tell me what you think it says and then I’ll know if I did it correct or not.

The letter is below:

Hola buen vecino. Esta carta no es una queja. Somos vecinos felices. Queremos explicar algo.
Yo y mi madre ama su perro y nunca voy a hacer daño a su perro. Le decimos que su perro lo sentimos pero hemos adoptado recientemente un gato. Ahora tenemos que asustar a su perro lejos. No estamos enojados. Pretendemos estar enojado. Nos damos un palo o una escoba y un grito. Tal vez su perro no va a aprender, pero vamos a intentarlo. No es culpa de su perro. Es un buen perro. Le gusta mi casa porque en el pasado le di comida muchas veces.
Ahora le gusta perseguir al gato. Tal vez le podemos enseñar a no venir ahora. Vamos a tratar.

I wanted to say, Ms. Whitfield, that watching your interviews for Going Clear, the HBO documentary, made me do some more research, and I’ve spent the entire day reading various discussions you’ve given, following up with more research. I’m one of those people who doesn’t like to believe something just based on one person’s “perception” (I never would have made it in Hubbard’s organization. I would have had a footlocker at the front of the ship that was all my own =P). Anyway, I just wanted to say that after everything I’ve read, and I realize (you’ve vocalized it yourself), that you feel embarrassment and shame over the periods where you did something that even _you_ questioned was right, I’m not sure you see how tremendously strong you were in the face of all of that _extreme_ adversity.

You talked about being depressed (for a good portion of the development of the “Ethics” program– at least from what I’ve been able to piece together). From what I’ve read, and the research I’ve done, you were
– learning how to captain a vessel that, at times, had a hundred or more crew
– were involved in all of the learnings that were required to achieve new levels, plus all the auditing
– had to keep focus as Hubbard passed down orders you questioned
– and had to shove out the negatives, trying to turn them into positives, so you could continue believing Hubbard was right, that he could do no wrong

Honestly, it’s a real wonder how you managed to keep sane.

I might have the wrong impression of how you feel, and about what was happening during that period, but from a few speeches (and public engagement transcripts), and your interviews with HBO, I think I have a pretty good handle on it. I say, you were tremendously brave, even though you didn’t question Hubbard and didn’t push back, because you were trying believe in something bigger, and I think we can all understand that desire. I think you were strong for holding on to _yourself_ long enough to not go mad. Especially under all of that pressure. Especially with a completely unsupportive husband, and a family who was so far away. Being on your own, as you were, it’s a wonder you didn’t go completely insane.

If I’d been a person who’d you’d “tortured” during that period (I’ve not seen you used the word “torture”, so it might seem extreme, but honestly, I think we can call a spade a spade, here), I’m not sure how I’d feel about you, now. I’d like to think I could forgive you, that I could see your struggle, as well as my own. I think that’s totally possible. Maybe you’ve spoken to some of the people (and, again, I’m a little unclear if you had to force people into the RHF (that’s what I mean by torture– not being able to bathe, eat, use a bathroom… I mean, you’ve said, yourself, how terrible it was. If you weren’t involved in that, then I’d modify this paragraph slightly). You sounded like you _tried_ to endure other people’s punishments _with_ them (in order to keep them going, to keep _them_ strong), and that’s the sign of a person, not only with great empathy, but with great compassion, too.

Anyway, I’m sorry, I know this is long and completely unsolicited, it’s just… I hope you can see how amazing you were in the face of something so all-consuming. And, from the sounds of it, though I really have no basis in fact about this, it sounds like you and your new husband have done a lot to help other people rid themselves of the monkey Scientology has become for them, too. So… kudos to you. Helping people has always been your calling, it would seem, and even though it’s much different from what you probably imagined it would be when you were younger, helping people is helping people. =) And that’s lovely.
