The self-appointed Leader of the Expedition couldn’t keep his crew together & hid, then left everybody high & dry.
Fact: He wasn’t the hired Captain nor crew. This was a massive wooden sailing ship, over 200 feet long, 40 foot beam, no motor power, just sails! Hard-ass vacation / adventure, lots of work involved with this running this boat. And too all those young, dumb, green horn ‘Jonahs’ on board. yeesh.

Reading James Free’s interview wherein he says that he & Ron did not return to Baltimore on the jinx ship Doris Hamlin. Says they caught a freighter from Puerto Rico to NOLA together… so, the ‘leader/captain/commander’ LRH, in the end, abandoned ship & crew all together. From 1st command to last, a gd cowardly lying cheating blowhard. yeesh.
The Doris Hamlin was jinxed, RMycroft – in the very end of her life, she went down to sea, disappeared, with all hands Feb. 1940.

By his own account, he calls himself the leader as it was his idea to charter the schooner. Big boat, 212′ & came with a for real Captain (Fred Garfield) too, who really didn’t like being bossed around by the 21 year old F*cktard. In later musings Ron calls himself the captain, then it goes to commander on the Scn. pages.
