When he just started out, he was too timid. But by the time that era had passed, it was too late to make new shit up, because people would have wondered why it took so long to “discover”. I think the lack of DM-generated upper level materials does point to the one area where he has DEEP insecurities.

Seriously, though… the incident in Tenarife when Hubbard came off his bike , breaking his arm and two ribs, marked the end of the original (sea-going) Sea Org and the beginning of Hubbard’s rapid physical and mental decline.

The fact that he soon became a sick, crotchety old man in hiding, completely out of touch, is what enabled Miscavige (who was in the right time at the right place) to seize power when he died, apparently of a several strokes

We will never know now, but I speculate that Hubbard also suffered a brain injury in this incident, which went undiagnosed and untreated. It would explain a lot about his subsequent behaviour.
