Wow! You’re a student! All of those are legends. Man, Rainey’s on a ton of sessions. I love Wimbish. That bass line sounds so simple, but it hits just the right spot. I was initially disappointed when Wimbish replaced Muzz Skillings (who is a monster too), but that quickly subsided. One of the jazz cats who worked at J&R back when I shopped there went to Berklee with Skillings and Will Calhoun. He said that all the drummers at the school used to line up just to hear Calhoun practice! I know he’s not really just a rock drummer, but he’s easily one of the best to arrive on the music scene in the last 25-30 years. As far as saxophonists go, there are so many greats — literally dozens who have gone under the radar. Two of my fave altoists are Gigi Gryce and Ernie Henry. As far as tenor goes, I can’t sop listening to Sonny or Wayne 🙂

Sounds like he´s playing fretless. Sliding the harmonics is a nice touch. Doug can play…
Been checking out some Rainey and Jamerson lately,along with Paul Chambers and Oscar Pettiford…and lots of saxophonists…

I had no other way of getting in touch with you since you haven’t been around much lately, so I’m replying to this really old post of yours. I’ve been getting into Living Colour again recently, and I can’t stop playing one of their tunes with a bassline to die for. It’s played by Doug Wimbish on the “Stain” album, and it’s one of the best lines I’ve heard a bassist play in a long while. I am curious to know what you think:

But c'mon, you know this cherch makes it almost ridiculously easy. It does everything in such bizarre extreme ways. I like to compare it to a carnival house of horrors or a circus fun-house, of a sinister flavor. I feel like I'm cheating. I'm glad you are no longer just lurking. Plus anger, outrage, frustration and vitriol are healthy emotional responses to the evil system of asset, time and soul sucking the "cherch" constructs around those who place their trust in the organization, every hour of every day.
