No donations were always voluntary. And Marty has clearly stated that many of those who came to him were just out of the Sea Org and couldn’t afford to pay anything. It amazes me that people like you will always find something to criticize. After 27 years in the Sea Org, Marty had no education, no job references, church members calling his job to get him fired. Marty’s blog is free and he hasn’t been paid for all the interviews he’s done. At least he’s making an effort to atone for his mistakes and help others. What are you doing besides being whiny and critical?

Like all cults, Sci has benefits for its elite members. In fact, it is designed to create an underclass of worker bees, intended to support a vicious bureaucracy through unpaid labor and servitude. The whales and public are the big sources of revenue, that can also be bullied around, spied on and manipulated. I do agree that Haggis is very forthright in disclosing that he desperately hoped to advance his career thru sci. But he actually seems more drawn in by the desire to save his relationship, which despite Scis promise, ended in a long and bitter divorce…How does is in ANY way relate to the Jewish community? You have some nerve, to try to compare the two. The Jewish community is over represented in charity and support for the arts and humanitarian causes. What does sci give to the world? I think Hana and Spanky especially described the lure of Scientology for the new member…a heady mix, a way to change e world one person at a time. Sara somewhat naively describes improving her spirituality….Do not judge everyone by yourself, some people are trying to better the world, or themselves. Some people have more than their own jealousy and an ax to grind. Your anger and resentment of the Jewish community is evident. I’m sure there are a lot of racist websites that would welcome your ‘insights.’ Maybe you should go there and explain to them why you are a failed screenwriter/director/actor.

That being said, I couldn’t help but notice that Mr Haggis and everyone else in the documentary tend to gloss over what REALLY drew them into this cult. And that, it seems, was a “Hollywood Secret Society” that would always put its own members first. Especially when comes time to make big decisions, on and off set.

I doubt Haggis and others donated millions of dollars to the cause because of any spiritual reason. They knew what they were doing. They were building a secret empire that is now worth 1.5 BILLION and has its tentacles all over the world.

I’m sure some people went into Scientology for some help with this or that. But the celebs? There’s a reason this religion was born in Hollywood. It’s almost as if non-Jews all got together and decided to counter that influence with a group of their own. To get the good parts, the good scripts, etc.

Nothing I have heard in Going Clear properly (or should I say ‘fully’) explains the initial lure of the Church.

Tell us the truth. Tell us you wanted a shortcut to success. It’s okay, just help us understand the lure.
