I look at this obscene commercial and I see vast numbers of people working in audio visual equipment production, printing, preparing uniforms and the like. My immediate thought is, none of these people are being paid minimum wages or overtime. Not only does Miscavige in this video flaunt Scientology’s blackmail-induced tax exemption by bragging about the “thousands” of new, expensive, tax free buildings it owns, he also flaunts the fact that he runs large businesses where wage and hour laws (and child labor laws) are ignored. The U.S, Fair Labor Standards Act has a limited exemption for volunteer religious workers, but this exemption was not intended to allow criminal churches to operate vast sweat shops that pay a few cents an hour with the claim that all workers are “volunteer religious ministers.” In the book 1984, the brainwashed, poor, hungry and dirty workers cried with pride as the newsreels proclaimed victory for the masses against the enemy of the day. This is no different than the exhausted, poor, and hungry Sea Org worker who believes this fraudulent video, and cries with pride.
