ah, thank you for the geography lesson! i’m not too good on figuring out latitude!! i’m half greek, but i just know i tan easy–more than likely because of that….only time i won’t go sit in the sun is if it’s around 100 out! brick streets get HOT too!

Actually if you go by latitude, Athens is a little north of NYC, so you’re a bit south of Athens, which means you get less sunlight than your ancestors did in the spring and summer, and more than they did in the fall and winter seasons.

i’ve pointed some out to my regular dr. before and she always says ‘they’re fine’….if she suspected any i know she’d either biopsy them herself or send me to a dermatologist….she’s well aware of my habit of sitting in the street…..
that’s very true re: old fashioned views on getting a tan….of course also in victorian times they were wearing so many layers of clothing, a parasol would give a bit of shade to help keep a wee bit cooler too!!
i’m in akron ohio….it’s not particularly ‘perfect’ but i just looked up athens on a google map and followed a line to akron….it’s about the same level–though of course we get winter here, as in lots of snow and cold…..

As long as you visit a dermatologist if you get a sudden mole or unexplained black spot, even somewhere that doesn’t get a lot of exposure, your should be okay.

I think my mothers objections, aside from wrinkles, was that her family was old-fashioned, because before WWI, the upper-class women weren’t expected to be out in the sun enough to get a tan. The only acceptable tan was if you were an explorer, a military officer in the colonies, or otherwise had a very good reason to be out of doors.

Looking at the pictures of Victorian/Edwardian times, you see that the ladies had parasols meant to block the sun if they were vacationing on the American East Coast which sees a lot more sun than soggy England does during the summertime.

As far as your ancestry goes, if you live south of NYC, which is a few degrees of latitude south of Athens, Greece, and north of the Equator, then you get less UV exposure than your ancestors did during the spring and summer, and you get more than they did in the fall or winter.

i’m half greek, i think i have some built in sun protection—that’s what i tell myself! 😀 i don’t sit in the sun so much for a tan—if i cared about that, i would not sit and read and end up with ‘literacy neck’ (which is a white neck from having your head down reading your book)….i just love how relaxing it is to sit in a comfy chair with my feet on another chair out in the brick street in front of my house and read and watch the land of misfit toys (my neighborhood) in action! 😀
