I was thinking if it has something to do with salt. Didn’t know elephants used to hang out in Kentucky. It had to be really long time ago. Thank you for the interesting info.
It reminds me of this large salt rock that my Grandpa kept next to the farm animals barn.
Sheep and goats loved it apparently, since it was all polished (licked) looking.

It's a giant salt lick and animals flock to it, but back when there were bison, saber-tooth cats, and even elephants in that part of the country, they would get stuck in the swampier parts, so it was a major early fossil quarry (all the big bones have been removed from the lick long since).
