I was on a committee that inspected all of the residential drug rehabs in our county including Narconon Vista Bay in Watsonville, CA. They recently changed the name to Redwood Cliffs. Our final report was extensive. During the process we learned that none of the top officials in our county knew that Narconon was Scientology but they also don’t know what Scientology is. In our interview with the Vista Bay director, when asked about the affiliation with Scientology, he said they used Hubbard curriculum but it was “non-secular”. He was very open to discussing the “non-secular” coursework, long hours in sauna and why they used Niacin (the whole drug flashback thing is in an addict’s muscles, etc). Since this was an inspection and not an investigation, our one major request in the report and in person with county officials was that the Health and Human Services Department reconsider the way they list Narconon on their residential drug referral website or to at least give information about the practices and it’s association with Scientology. Five years later it’s still on their website front and center listing the cost as 19K rather than 30K. So as long as cities and counties support Narconon facilities like Santa Cruz County does (Scientology boasts a number of plaques they have received form local law enforcement officials, mayors, city council, etc.) I don’t have high expectations that this deceptive and dangerous drug rehab organization will dwindle any time soon.
