Yes, from what I have heard and read from old time members, the church was way less centralized decades back, before DM’s massacre of the mission holders. (And maybe that was Lrons’s eventual intention, I would imagine…the reining in of control and income). They were run like businesses trying to attract and please customers, and were not Sea Org slave pits. But it is sure a Fear Factory these days.

Actually, too much of anything is bad. You can die from too much Vitamin A. That’s why Scientology’s quackery is so dangerous–what is safe depends on the amount taken, the person’s prior history, etc. You can’t just say “take this” or “stop taking this”.
