Thank you for your insights. I agree with your assessment that he went for a totally simplistic, black-and-white, cursory explanation of the Dhammapada, which could also explain LRH’s views about “pulling it in.” If he had read the Buddhist resources that would have been available to him in the 1950s-1960s, he would have seen that kamma/karma is only one of the causes and conditions that affect the way in which your life can suck. And I’m not saying that Buddhism is correct, just that what LRH wrote/said bears little resemblance to it.

And LRH wouldn’t have been the first to claim that he was a new Buddha. There have been thousands of them over the years, and they tended to demand absolute obedience as well. One of the most recent examples was a person who claimed to be an incarnate lama and convinced her followers to purchase a parrot for $50k because it was a disciple in another life.

Well, I’m not an expert, but in the beginning, when he was lifting ideas from everyone from Freud to Marx, Elron stated priinciples such as “what is true for you is true for you.” He was aiming at a simplistic version of the beginning of the Dhammapada…”We are what we think/All that we are arises from our thoughts/With our thoughts we make the world.” Of course, like practically all his ideas, he immediately contradicted them, at least in action. Another is the responsibility for one’s own karma, as in the Brahma Viharas: “You are the owner of your karma. Your happiness and unhappiness arise from your own thoughts and actions.” The thing is that in these cases, as well as his plagiarisms from Taoism and you name it, his methods were aimed at brainwashing, not freeing oneself. For example, he used the idea of karmic responsibility as a reason for imprisoning small children who annoyed him.

Tory Christman and Jon Atack have mentioned that at some point Elron decided that HE had been the Buddha, an idea that makes my stomach react in what in Buddhism would be called a very unskillful way. Jon Atack’s book goes into the lifting of various “ideas” from Eastern sources in a very detailed and thoughtful way…I recommend it. As I’m sure you know, “buddha” means something like “the awakened one.” The effect of Elron’s tech is just the opposite: it hypnotizes people and distances them from their own experience. But in the beginning he framed what he was doing as though it WERE a version of awakening, which is what attracted smart, idealistic people like Jon Atack.
