Absolutely.. My children went to public school and one is a Professor in College.. and the other is going to be a math teacher. They both had a great education..

Also Candy.. The teachers in Mont.. system were told not to comfort a child when they were physically or emotionally hurt. No smoothing away the Boo Boos..

Children were being trained to ” Buck Up.. ” and not in a healthy promoting independence way.

I am a nurturer and when a child falls I will step up to the plate and say, ” Ouch, that hurt, huh? and comfort them in my own way.

I would validate their hurt.. ” Gary hurt your feelings because you weren’t asked to be on his team. Yeah, that would hurt my feelings too. But Kelly is our new student why don’t you show her the ropes around here..You are so friendly. ”

For them.. it is ” IGNORE ” .. Let the kid figure it out for themselves. I remember a child crying and the teacher said.. ” You know what our rule is ” FIGURE IT OUT..”

It just saddened me. I wouldn’t baby them in a fetal position, but I would attempt to either divert or listen to them ..I wanted them to feel safe in my presence.

Baby: Thank you so much for your observations about that method/environment. It’s as I feared. Thankfully (or not) it also looks like there are more learning models being shopped around these days. I’m curious to see what the options are but am more of the same mind as you: that structure and organization can be a good thing… for both fun and learning.

Is $300 commision a normal fee?

As a former teacher.. Montessori.. ugh.. Seriously..

I observed one for a week.. They had bunk beds and the concept was that the kids were to read quietly on the top and bottom beds.. to ” Relax ” while reading..

All I saw were kids jumping from the top bunk to the Bean Bag chairs below.. Teachers didn’t want to ” Damper ” their play by insisting that they do school work..

Also learning centers ( Card tables) everywhere and they had to do work at the tables to proceed to the next.. OK cool concept..

In reality kids would say to each other.. ” The answer on Table 4 is 37..” all around the room.. .. Just a joke.. I would NEVER recommend a Montessori school for anyone.

You can make structure and organization fun..and learning happens.

yeah, i see your point. Thanks MissionaryKid. it would be kind of fun to see her and SO square off. sorta like a slacker Modern Times, where the charlie chaplin character thought bubbles are all about how SO needs to get in touch with the universe and let him/her work according to his/her own undelimited clock. Like Metropolis in reverse. Oh wait. Maybe just Metropolis, but with more slapstick and more annoying.

gross. reminds me of a friend. i love him, but i’m not down with the finger shoveling, non-showering thing. again, i’m not especially pristine or picky… but i guess i buy into more americanisms than i think…

The problem is, she doesn’t take orders very well. That’s a big no-no for Clamland. Her self-centeredness fits, but she doesn’t want to be a worker bee, which makes her a liability in their eyes. I think she’d try to gold-brick and do things on her own schedule. They’d show her the door in a heartbeat. If she doesn’t produce income, she won’t be ethical. 🙂
