I got your idea on the ‘missing the deception’ well I have done that my entire life. An example being putting my finger in molted plastic because a guy told me it would feel good. Yes, most my entire life. I am sure mostly that was because I really wasn’t paying much attention to much of anything just happily skipping along in life with a big smile. I never got deceived by the same scheme twice.
I guess I would be called Theete Wheete !
I think it’s probably something basic where I just care about doing whatever for whom ever with little regard to myself ‘cept maybe staying in ones good favor but then that doesn’t work out because I was very much a rabble rouser in that I could not be ordered to do action that were off policy = lots and lots of sec-checks, comm eves, RPF etc.
So I don’t know….

Wow…forty years. Its possible we passed in the hallway somewhere. 😉

Missing the deception is a mysterious mixture (IMHO) of wanting at least the larger promises of Scientology to become true (ie a world without war, crime or insanity) combined with the spirit of adventure of doing something on the vanguard (back in the day anyway) plus the not negligible, but usually temporary “whee factor” that auditing can supply to some people.

Looking past the crazier aspects to some degree could be enabled by the belief that one is on the vanguard and that sometimes new ideas take awhile to mature. Or something.

I still think the Data Series has some value. Its not perfect, but can be applied to some beneficial effect in some circumstances. In fact some of the most withering criticisms of Scientology have been written by people who knew the Data Series cold and used it to dissect the more malevolent aspects of the philosophy.

But using Scientology to try and understand Scientology is a fool’s errand (IMHO.)

Best to find a bigger contextual framework in which to fit Scientology, including just shrugging and saying to oneself….NEXT!..then moving on.

I was in 40 years with 20 years of staff at AOLA. I was never trained to create the deception but yes, I repeated what Ron said – many of which is half truths at best.
It’s interesting that some of his tech was how to one’s self spot all this supposed deception with the data series and various confront drills. Ron actually taught us how to NOT fall into the same trap he set-up. When we (trained) saw out-points we justified/reasoned them. Why exactly I did that is still unknown to me but I am on a quest to find out.
I justified outpoints even when I first got in. The data series was my first course. I applied it except for when the situation was including a certain amount personal involvement I guess.

It is beyond belief and the quality of the deception has degenerated to the
point that much of it is easy to see, especially by folks that were trained in
how to create the deception(s) in the first place.

It is a bit ironic (as you probably know) that the so-called
“Brainwashing Manual” actually used to be sold in some org
bookstores. Now that it has gone down the memory hole and popped back out
(apparently) to be used as a “confidential briefing” tool, is has a new life.

Anonymous, Thank you for the link, but I actually have the book. I bought the book after I went to an event at LA ORG about 6 years ago. It was surreal. We had to be BONDED in order to be admitted. And the talk was all about the Brainwashing Manual. They were trying to scare us into believing that America was at risk. Of course this was supposed to add up to those present making large donations. The book sounded so fishy that I just had to see for myself. I did a little research and like you found out about Horner. I was really furious about the deception. And then a close friend told me that the Sea Org showed her the Brainwashing Manual when her son was trying to route out. The message was: See the threat we face. You must convince your son to stay. It is all such a slimy scam. It is really beyond belief.

Never let the truth get in the way of a bigoted rant. McSlappy is barking mad and his rants prove that.
