You haven’t noticed that Scientology promises shortcuts to some of the hardest-to-attain-human conditions; power over others due to their respect and admiration for us, self-control, self-empowerment, peace of mind, enhanced intellectual and mental powers, all that? All of the things which each person has to struggle with through their lifetime, they have a short-cut for. And how far they can stretch out that shortcut, and how much they ask people to pay for it, clearly demonstrates how desperately people want improvement in those areas.
And how much they despair of finding it on their own.

I’ve posted elsewhere that I knew John personally and worked with him. He was one of the gentlest, sweetest, most loving individuals I’ve ever known.

I’m not necessarily an Anglophile, but I certainly enjoy the differences and similarities in the two cultures.

Love it. You’re moniker threw me off. We’re contemporaries (66) and I enjoy most things British, especially the droll humor.

Trust me, I have asked the same question many times, going right back to the shower treatment in 1968. Actually there were a few who adopted similar resistance tactics and that degrading practice was stopped when word of it went public. Unfortunately, they came up with other tortures to replace it. I am writing a novel about Nazi Germany at the moment and am asking the same question about all the “good” Germans who stood by while those atrocities happened. Perhaps I’ll be able to contribute some insight into an all-too-common human phenomenon.
