If “St. Hill size” is the goal for each Org, then the low numbers listed for E. and W. Sussex should wake up members of the church, if they ever see this document. That brings up another question, if there was a push for members to identify themselves in the census, you would think they would want to see the resultant government report. The answer to question is, of course, if Miscavige is silent on it, no one dare bring it up, if Miscavige tells the members that the census reports that there are 1-2 million members in England/Wales, no one dare question that number; and if Miscavige tells the media, if asked, that the census numbers are corrupt and the real proof of expansion is the numbers of new buildings, no one in the church will dare to object.

I think it likely that the cult worked really hard to get members to list their religion on the Census as a way of showing “straight up and vertical” expansion. As bad as the total number is, it would probably have been a lot worse if they didn’t push people. Also, I suspect that a lot of the responses are for employees at St. Hill — note that West Sussex and East Sussex have about 800 Scientologists between them, which is more than the numbers in Greater London. That seems to be consistent with what I know of staff size at Saint Hill plus allowance for family members, etc.

I doubt the number of “independent Scientologists” would move the needle much on the census numbers for Scientology overall. So I don’t think that there would be much impact on Miscavige or on the cult if it were possible to break out cult members from “indies.”

I would be surprised if more than 10% of the non-Sussex Scientologists in the census were independents… I would also be surprised if the global Indie movement of all stripes (Freezone, iScientology/Steve Hall related groups, independent auditors, etc) was more than about 1,500 people versus a cult membership (including staff) of about 25,000 worldwide.

How ironic if it turns out that independent Scientologists make up a large chunk of the Scientologists listed in this census. If Miscavige claims that many members of the church didn’t list their religion, and that is why the numbers are low, he’s dug himself into a hole, and it would beg the question, why not? Fear? If independents came forward and claimed they had listed Sceientology as their religion, Miscavige is in even deeper trouble.
