As far as “Third World Man ” is concerned, I always loved the rhythmic “feel” of the very slow tempo. Speaking as a musician, certain grooves are more difficult the more slowly they’re played … and as a musician friend of mine once said, Third World Man is a “lesson in time.”

The song was called “The Second Arrangement.” It was ultimately replaced on the “Gaucho” album by “Third World Man,” which I think is a brilliant example of a song that fuses Becker’s more snarling, cynical lyrics with some outstanding guitar work.

Fagen & Becker didn’t re-record the song, and didn’t play it live in concert until a “rarities” night in the 8-concert home stand at the Beacon Theater in NYC in September, 2011. I was in the audience with several members of the official Steely Dan internet fan club that night, and we just about fell out of our chairs — we had all, of course, heard it on bootlegs of various demo tapes, but it was amazing to hear a live “official” version. It was as big a night for true Steely Dan fanatics as the night in the same theater two years prior when they played “Doctor Wu” for the first time live ever.

Oh man … The GodWhackers! They let the stars “bleed out” … and that’s a great album!
Unusual for a group to reform after so many decades with such great new material.

You seem to know a lot about Steely Dan. Ever hear the story about how the “best song” from Gaucho was accidentally erased? There was a back-up copy, but being such audio perfectionists, they refused to press a record from anything but the original master.
I want to hear that song!

I call it, “speaking Scientologese.” And yes, it is an annoying and pernicious language that takes some time to shake!

Another interesting thing about Scientologese is that a “native speaker” can tell if somebody’s faking very quickly. It just takes a slight misuse, such as “I’m going in for an audit” and you know that person isn’t or hasn’t been a Scientologist. Parsing such idiotic terms as “lines,” “ruds,” “comm,” and especially more advanced argot such as “crossflowed” correctly takes many years of being in.

Very tricky, eh?
