Gnosticism was a religious system. Rather than a single religion, it was multiple religions that shared ideas that were in the zeitgeist at the time. Some were derived from Judaism, some from nascent Christianity, some from pagan sources (both Greco-Roman and other). One of those ideas was the idea that the body, and the physical world, were evil, whereas the spirit was good. Some Gnostics believed that there was a evil god who created the physical world and a good one responsible for the physical world–very dualistic. Very similar, in fact, to what we see Scientology doing, with its concept of the ‘meat body.’
