In my opinion, Those who watch movies with a deeper level of complexity as "The Master", accomplish it the underlying message: The Master is not the teacher or his inflexible wife, but the object of endless experiences Them: Freddie Quell.
Think of the qualities and the psychological structure que supposed "Master" should have or even be. So, whom preserves, from beginning to end of the narrative the constant and invariable psychological structure?

I actually felt like he (Freddie) was a reflection of the film's director. Paul Thomas Anderson is no stranger to the exploration of sex and violence, misogyny and the meaning of faith (Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia,There Will Be Blood) and I saw in Freddie a man with all of these issues coming into contact with Dodd; this may be an oversimplification and I really am no expert on Scientology (I am about the first third of the way through 'Going Clear') but it felt like PT Anderson putting himself into an imaginary relationship with Hubbard and seeing how it would play out. Very beautifully shot film and much easier on Scientology than I had come to expect from all of the hype. I might go so far as to say that if it hadn't been protested so much you would really have to be well acquainted with the faith to even know it was about Hubbard.

Alonzo, your posts are always interesting and informative.

A 1948 arrest was noted in Hubbard's FBI file, according to Russell Miller. "A trifling misunderstanding over a cheque led to the embarrassment of his being arrested by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff, fingerprinted and charged with petty theft. He was released on bail of $500 while the Sheriff's Forgery Detail investigated the circumstances of the offence. On 19 August 1948 he was arraigned at San Gabriel Township Justice Court where he entered a plea of not guilty and waived trial by jury. However, by the time the trial date came around on 31 August, Hubbard changed his plea to guilty and was fined $25... Ron never mentioned the incident to his friends and the court files were destroyed in 1955, so it will never be known precisely what he had done wrong." http://www.spaink.net/cos/rmiller/bfm08.htm
In a 1951 letter to the FBI, Hubbard mentioned that he had once been arrested in Los Angeles when his wife Sara left their baby unattended in a car. http://www.spaink.net/cos/rmiller/bfm11.htm
On December 16, 1952, during the PDC, Hubbarrd was arrested and briefly jailed. Helen O'Brien said, "Two detectives in plain clothes and a policeman in uniform came in. I asked them what they wanted and they said, ... "We've got a warrant for Hubbard and we are going to take him". My husband and I got in the paddy-wagon with Ron. They fingerprinted him and put him a cell - it was the only time he was ever behind bars. I called my brother, who was a lawyer, and he got Ron out on $1000 bail later that afternoon." Russell Miller continues, "The cause of this spot of bother was Don Purcell, who was still doggedly pursuing Hubbard through the courts in an attempt to get some of his money back and keep the Wichita Foundation in business. When he heard Hubbard was in Philadelphia, Purcell filed an affidavit in Pennsylvania District Court accusing him of wrongfully withdrawing $9286 from the bankrupt Wichita Foundation." http://www.spaink.net/cos/rmiller/bfm12.htm
