Tonight on ‘Leah Remini’: Marc & Claire Headley on forced abortions and Sea Org escapes

marc_claire_headley_ae

Watching tonight’s fifth episode of A&E network’s Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, we kept thinking about how it’s really about time we re-read Marc Headley’s great 2009 escape narrative, Blown for Good.

In the second half of tonight’s episode, you’ll get a good sense of how Marc and his wife Claire Headley made their escapes from Scientology’s “Gold Base” near Hemet, California in January 2005, but for the full craziness of their lives at the base and how they managed to get away, you really should get a copy of Marc’s book. It’s the most fun to read of all the books that came out in a small wave by former Scientologists around that time, and part of that is because Marc is such a great storyteller.

But Claire really steals the spotlight when she brings up a subject Leah has been angling toward through the first half of her eight-episode special series: Forced abortions in the Sea Org. Now, Claire brings that subject into the open in a way that should shock viewers and crank up the outrage among an audience that, judging by their reactions on social media, has already been besides themselves with rage.

Claire featured prominently in a previous film about forced abortions in the Sea Org that was put together six years ago by the Tampa Bay Times. And the subject of the first half of tonight’s episode — about the propaganda spewed by Scientology at its own members at its annual events — has also been examined before. But once again, there’s something about the way Leah Remini brings the subject to the screen that makes it feel as compelling as if it were being revealed for the first time.

We do want to point out one thing to keep people from getting the wrong impression. It’s repeatedly mentioned in the episode that Marc and Claire sued the Church of Scientology over their treatment in the Sea Org, and lost. It’s said in a way as if they were actually apologizing for not having won, and the church itself certainly wants to give the impression that their loss in court is somehow a statement about their credibility.

But someone ought to point out — and we’ll go ahead and be the ones to do it — that if you read the actual appeals court decision that upheld the lawsuit’s dismissal, Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain of the Ninth Circuit says quite clearly that the Headleys did endure hardships that were almost hard to believe — but that their attorneys had sued under a law that perhaps wasn’t the best for the abuses the Headleys experienced. In other words, the Headleys lost purely for legal reasons, and not for factual ones. We think that’s pretty important to point out, and the Headleys certainly don’t have anything to apologize for.

Also new in this episode is Leah coming under surveillance herself. This is the episode when she went to Denver and was stalked by private investigators, one of whom we actually outed as a former disgraced Denver cop named Daril Cinquanta.

Now we get to see the private eyes scrambling as Mike Rinder gets in their faces and tries to get them to admit what they’re doing. It’s fun television. And Mike does all his own stunts!

Please join us in the comments section as the show airs tonight on A&E, and let’s live blog this thing like crazy.

PS: After watching the episode, we wanted to add one thing. One of the heroes of tonight’s dramatic story never actually appears onscreen. And so we’ll do it here.

bernie_headley

Bernie Headley, you are one of our personal heroes, and we’re damn glad we got to spend time with you last year when we visited Denver.

PPS: Here’s YouTube video of the superb Tampa Bay Times video about forced abortion in the Sea Org.

And here’s Mark Bunker’s interview of Gary “Jackson” Morehead, who said it was his job, as Scientology security, to coerce young Sea Org women into having abortions…

              `Will do!!

    • Ella Raitch

I don’t think she has the f’ing rank

  • Last time I posted this with passion was on New Years of Debbie Cook’s letter.
    I like how it feels.

  • My favorite part… the PIs running like scared little kids!
And Leah be like… ‘Have Some!’

  • gtsix

Have a lovely night, evening, morning or afternoon bunkerbabes. (Johny, put your pants… oh never mind).

Am off to bed, work beckons and the morning is never far away.

This is an amazing series. May the masses move the mountain. And drop it on that fucking runts head.

    • Johnny Tank (Forever Autumn)

I’m getting totally nekkid, and heading for bed. Got to get up for work 8 hours from now. FML.

      Night all!

  • Baby

Aaron Smith-Levin… You know you and I have talked about losing our twins. I am already sobbing just seeing the upcoming show. (HUGS) It’s a Twin thing..

I’ve had to lay down to watch tonight.. actually I have laid down most of the day.. ( NO need to comment..) I know when to lay down.

But Leah.. You are a True Warrior..

Marc and Claire. You continue to lend your Powerful Voices to Educate and to give the facts about this dangerous Cult.

    Thanks Tony.

    • Qbird

wrapping my arms around you, baby. Kisses you right on your forehead.
will see you soon, so glad to ‘see’ you here.

    • MadisonAgain

      ((hugs))

    • FredEX2

Thinking of you and sending ((hugs)) Baby.

  • Michael Leonard Tilse

It just occurred to me that Leah’s ‘Scientology: The Aftermath’ will reach world wide with it’s truth about the cult to far more people in more countries than Scientology has reached with it’s lies in it’s entire existence.

How do you like them graphs Davy? Does she have the rank now?

    • Marc Headley

Leah’s show reached more people tonight than have ever been in Scientology in it’s history for sure. That is a tweet.

      • Michael Leonard Tilse

Thanks so much to you and Claire.

      • Qbird

        I floored. jaw agape. yowza

      • Baby

love you guys.. Living well is the best revenge! Your family and home are so lovely..

      • Kim O’Brien

or have prolly ever HEARD of scientology . Can you imagine if this show was the first info you ever had ? Gulp

      • chukicita

Y’all have done more to improve the planet in the last few weeks than Scientology has done in 65 years.

  • PreferToBeAnon2

After watching these shows, I don’t know whether to laugh, cry, spit nails or eat. When in doubt, I usually do the latter. Anybody have any brownies? I need me a big one.

  • Newiga

Totally O/T, sorry: I can still snooze for a few minutes before I have to get ready for work.

    • DoveAlexa

4:30am here, I regret… some of this, actually.

    • MaxSpaceman

Work?!? Virtually every American who’s traveled abroad, through the EU, Scandinavia and Finland, would say, unequivocally, that no one in Finland has to go to work until after the New Year 🙂

      • Newiga

        I wish it was so… Can’t complain too much though. I’ll have a holiday in February-March. 😉

    • 5 Feet Long and Luminous

A quick nap while you put the coffee on…

      • Newiga

        So satisfying. 😉

  • amarie

Tony, I’ve followed your work for a while, and I’ve learned so much – when I was young and wandering, I was pretty fascinated by the Ft Harrison building and everything weird that went on around it. I took an online personality test (early 90s, maybe?) and my wakeup call came from seeing “SCIENTOLOGY” on my caller ID 5x a day for about four months “HEY NEW PERSON, COME PLAY WITH US!”.
Funny how it takes a magazine subscription a couple of months to get my address change each time I move, but generally my first piece of mail in any new house is from CofS and I’m not TRYING to get mail from THEM lol

You guys are a great group to read and learn from. I’ll try and keep my stupid questions to a minimum 🙂

    • chukicita

      No question is stupid. Welcome.

      • L. Wrong Hubturd

Well, except some of Jimmy3’s questions.

        • chukicita

I forgot to say that, but I figured someone would.

        • amarie

          I accept that as a challenge 😉

    • DoveAlexa

Wow, super glad to hear you caught onto them so fast!

      • amarie

LOL I mean, I was probably desperate for friends or something in my life at that time, but they came across as Stage V Clingers on Day One….

        • Kim O’Brien

kind of like ” Up with People” . they freaked me out 😉

    • Ella Raitch

Like Chukicita said….we understand that times like this we will get an influx of people with incredulous questions. Anyone who is against the CO$ wants more and more people educated and lobbying against its behaviour. You might get overlooked in the increasing flow of comments and some questions that seem simple are long and complex to answer. The more you read, the more you’ll get.

    • PickAnotherID

The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask.

  • Lois Reisdorf (Lowie)

Thank you Mike & Leah and the Headley’s. This was such a powerful episode especially about the smoke and mirrors of their PR to the flock. You guys just bust it wide open and exposed the truth. I have lost my son and my side of the family but I just could not imagine losing both sides of our family. I am thankful I have my husband’s great family now. I also just cannot ever understand how a parent can click the phone down and not wanting to hear about their first grandchild that was just born, that got me………unimaginable!! THANK YOU. To any Scientologists who may be lurking – SHAME ON YOU! OPEN YOUR EYES AND WAKE UP!!!!!!

    • Ella Raitch

      …..and get out!

      • Lois Reisdorf (Lowie)

        YES!

      • Liberated

I wish someone would ask Tommy boy Cruise…..”come on man, don’t tell me you don’t know about this stuff”. Time to fess up.

  • Upvote Bernie to the stratosphere if you are Human.

    • everchangingmeezer (wogsy)

I’m an elf but I’ll still uPvote.

    • Bernie Headley

You are too kind! I’m just a dad who cares!

      • And that’s why. Love.

        • Qbird

being there when it really really counts. this is not always so in this world.

    • Jimmy3

Is this offer available to Hubots as well?

  • Bailey1017

Is there anyone in scientology who are approved to be of the bubble? I am assuming some people who are tasked with PR may leak things to members?

  • 5 Feet Long and Luminous

Leah on Twitter about other stories she’s been hearing since the show started: “It gets worse.” It always does. (F5)

    • Newiga

Always worse than you think. Always.

  • PerpetualOutflow

Each episode of Aftermath is so good that I can’t help but want to rewatch the previous one as they are played after the show. Respect and immense gratitude to Leah and every person involved in the show for your courage, heart, and integrity.

  • Marc Headley

I got so many new follows and hearted so many post that twitter locked up my account! I had to reset my password and got back in but not allowed to heart any more tweets. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3b2b708dbc8d735afc9a9956e2a19dc905a456a2f1fa9d7c2bbbf6d556dcc7e6.png

    • Here come some more then!

    • PreferToBeAnon2

Marc and Claire, thank you for all that you do!

    • Ella Raitch

I hope all of those new followers buy a copy of your excellent book

    • mockingbird

Another promotion of your book and a possible sequel may be good ideas now. New opportunities will present themselves. For critics of Scientology 2016 has been an amazing year and 2017 may be even better.

    • Twitter is being stupid for a sec. Hugs to you guys.

    • madame duran

There are daily limits set by Twitter. It thinks your account is a bot for liking/tweeting so much.

      • Robert Eckert

        He’s a tweeting machine!

  • MaxSpaceman

DeVocht’s comprehensive blanket apology to any an all people he may have hurt or harmed with his actions in Scn and anything to do with disconnection is

    stunning in its immensity.

(In “A Leader Emerges” episode, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath).

  • Supper Powers

Sorry Marc, Claire outdoes you every day of the week. All day long. Good work, chickadee! 🙂

  • Hey Dave, you know the Old Man’s bridge you were trying to finish?
I think the SPs just dug up the On-Ramp.

  • A True Prince

Great show and it gets better but the question that comes to mind is just how does this church pay for the places that will be eventually a empty vacant place, doesn’t someone dealing with real estate can just say no to them, just how do they get the right to buy a building can anyone stop them.

    • TrishRan

One thing – churches don’t pay real estate taxes, so once they own a property it costs them far less to maintain it that it would cost a private citizen or a corporation.

  • PreferToBeAnon2

Well I am going to get my copy of Blown For Good and settle in for the night…. Thanks for the fire hose of comments tonight all–it was a good drink!

    • Bailey1017

just ordered from amazon to my kindle. I expect Wednesday is my day to read.

      • PreferToBeAnon2

Better set aside the whole day — you won’t be able to put it down!

        • Bailey1017

As I expect. I am a cover to cover reader..:)

  • Michael Leonard Tilse

Thanks again for the wonderful machine-gun commentary and live updates on the show. Amazing!

And, good night to all. <3

  • Under the Radar

    WOW! WOW! WOW!

Riveting! Hurricane Leah – LEVEL 5 – Off the Charts!

Merry Rinder and Happy Remini – David Miscavige.

    Tick fricken Tock!

  • Ella Raitch

In positive news for Scientology, world wide name recognition for David Miscavige is through the roof

    • JJ

This has got to be THE PR nightmare of all nightmares for CoS, they just cremated and dumped the founder, but this shit just goes on and on and on. Maybe having people select, groom, scam, and file the teeth down of a prospective mate was a leetle too much? Maybe? Jya’think
This is on par with Catholic Church Child Molestation and Madoff.

  • Newiga

Somewhere out there Davey boy is popping a vein… and a bottle of whiskey.

    • madame duran

I wish his liver would take a cue already and just go on strike or sumthin’.

  • Kim O’Brien

so like a bajillion more people know that DM is as tall as a 5th grader .

    i really enjoy that

    • Liberated

My kid was taller than prick face in the 3rd grade.

      • Kim O’Brien

3rd ? even better LOL 🙂 I will never take shit from a man who comes up to my tits . General rule .

        • Liberated

          There ya go.

        • Jimmy3

Not touching this with a 4’13 Pole

          • What’sup

Oh!!! “up to” i read that wrong.

            • Jimmy3

Some people pay extra for that kinda action, Cotton

            • What’sup

              You’re preaching to the choir.

          • Kim O’Brien

if your pole was 4’13 ….you can touch me anytime

            • Jimmy3

I just checked… I don’t think I will be touching you any time soon. But I’m gonna try really hard.

            • FredEX2

Ms Kim O’Brien…report to ethics immediately!!! 🤓

        • John Prince

..pretty good rule to live by 👏

    • Marc Headley

I am going to measure my 10 year old tomorrow. I think he might be taller that Tiny Fists.

      • Kim O’Brien

        perpective LOL 😉

    • 5 Feet Long and Luminous

You know, Davey’s my size. I’m sure I’ve got some old skirts around that would still fit him.

      • StudentOfLife

He will need them once he’s in prison and they will make it easier to apply the lipstick I will send to all the inmates who will make sure that he is “loved” properly. Wheh, the wee little perverted Miscavige brings out the anger in me, lol.

      • Kim O’Brien

peddle pushers . they are better cuz they make his ankles look fat . i like that

        • Liberated

          How about culottes, remember those?

          • Kim O’Brien

we called them gaucho’s LOL …

    • Jack99

      Basically, Fuck you, David Miscavige!

      • PreferToBeAnon2

Yep… this was when she was doing DWTS

  • 5 Feet Long and Luminous

So their fans need to recognize this as selfish bullshit and stop supporting them till they wake up. Well, these two are probably lost causes. For other lesser “celebs,” maybe there’s hope. I’m so tired of reading people online saying things like, “Well, so and so doesn’t really talk about it so I give them a pass.” No! Their continued involvement is guilt by association. Nail them to the wall on it.

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/31c9b92f583b52bcc84eaa5dd1f97cfc1e51b208f3b39bf7535dc4defbdd332a.png

    • DoveAlexa

OOOHHH! She actually said it! Guess nothing is off limits now.
      Not that they’ll say anything.

    • JJ

I can see TC being that mean, but John seems like a good person. Everyone says he is a really nice, kind man. Maybe Scientology just has him by the balls and I mean literally. Who knows what they could be holding over him. Career and life destroying shit?

      • 5 Feet Long and Luminous

Like JT couldn’t hire his own team of bulldog lawyers. I think some variation of “but it has worked for me” is present for all of them. It’s the attitude scientology cultivates. Doesn’t mean JT’s not a nice guy; but he is selfish. And the fact that he let Rathbun use his plane to haul Annie Broeker back when she tried to escape will always make me thing less of him.

      • TrishRan

The black turtleneck video suggests to me that COS tapped into a mean streak in Cruise and encourages him to enjoy it. Perhaps in Travolta they use some kind of “greater good” approach to keep his attention away from the very real harm.

    • Chewkacca

EVERY movie they make, blast it with rotten tomatoes, so it has a ranking. They will go away. Sullenly, slinking, but go away they will. WAROOUNK!

    • TrishRan

I know what you mean. I remember hearing or reading someone mentioning that when visiting Tom Cruise’s house that the place was full of low-level Scientologists doing his laundry, housework & such. There was never a time when TC was folding the clothes of a higher-level Scientologist, so on some level he must know that he is getting treated differently from other parishioners.

As for Travolta – saw him in Lawrence Wright’s movie bragging about how smart he was to ignore his father’s advice and drop out of high school, and how much more education he supposedly got from the COS. He might not be smart enough to realize the full depth of the evil, but he can’t be so stupid as to have noticed none of it.

  • PickAnotherID

Whoa! Over 1,000 comments in less than 2 hours. Eat whatever passes for your heart out Miscavige.

    • PreferToBeAnon2

Geez, I remember when breaking 100 comments a day over at the Village Voice was a big one! Oh no… do I sound like my grandmother who used to tell stories about buying an ice cream for a nickel?

      • JJ

It happens to the best of us, There is old and there is death. I remember $3.00 for a movie. And I think we will live to see the 50 cent first class postage stamp…

        • PreferToBeAnon2

and live to see this cult go down in flames!

          • Chewkacca

It will go down in flames, considering how they fight fire with gasoline……. SNOOURT!

        • PickAnotherID

Giving my age away with this, but I remember when gasoline was 19 cents a gallon.

          • JJ

Won’t work with me, I don’t drive… I do know they used to give away dishes in the fifties to get people to use a particular station…

            • PreferToBeAnon2

Ha! My family got a vacuum cleaner using S&H greenstamps!

            • TickTockDave

I used to have to fill those darn stamp books as punishment. A good portion of my college dorm items were acquired via S&H greenstamps. And the yellow stamps, too. What were they called? TopValue?

          • FredEX2

Math question. If I was 16 when gas was $0.35/ gallon…how old am I now? 😆

      • Robert Eckert

“You are old, Mr Clarke,” the woman said, stunned,
        “And your music has gone out of style;
Yet your circles are full and your comments +1’d
Have you been on the net a long while?”

“In my youth,” Mr. Clarke replied to the lass,
        “Our flamewars used genuine fires.
I still carve my zeroes; my ones are hand-cast.
They barely fit through the wires.”

“You are old,” said the girl, “you once used AOL
As shorthand to mean ‘you are clueless’.
I’ve no doubt at all you were once on the WELL —
Are you awestruck by all the newness?”

“In my youth,” said the blogger, pausing his post,
        “Discussions on Usenet were clever.
And here we are still, and I don’t mean to boast,
But I’m just as witty as ever.”

“You are old, said the girl again, “antedating
        Both Napster and Wikipedia.
Are you really a part of the world we’re creating
        With sharing and social media?”

“In my youth” said the writer, “we shared without fail:
The carbon would blacken our cc’s.
We guessed from their style which posters were male,
But often we doubted their species.”

“You are old,” said the girl, “I can scarcely believe
The time you have been wasting in chatter.
What famines and poverties did you relieve
        What injustices did you shatter?”

“I have answered three questions, and that is enough,”
Said Chris; “Tell me how if you’re friendless
You expect you can change all of that crucial stuff?
The potential of wank is just endless.”
