Troublemakers: The women who won’t keep quiet about Scientology

TroubleWomenFour

We’re just back from what turned out to be an incredible day here in Adelaide. Not only was it a big day here at the Underground Bunker with our big Leah Remini scoop, but we also had an event to put on here in this South Australian capital, and it was great. Our thanks to Bryan Seymour and Nick Xenophon for helping us put on a fun show at “The Wheaty,” the funky entertainment space at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. And now, for the real capper to our day…

To help celebrate the publication of Leah Remini’s book, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, our own TheHoleDoesNotExist has secretly been working on a new song with several other Bunker denizens. If you enjoyed her last work — the official theme song of the Underground Bunker — we think you’ll enjoy her tribute to troublemaking women. Take it away, Moxie Magee!

And speaking of troublemaking women, Karen de la Carriere sent us her latest video, part four in her series about Heber Jentzsch. Give it a look!

OK, it’s the end of a long day here. And tomorrow, it’s on to Perth!

Tony reported this at his Aussie tour, so no secret. I just looked it up to see the address and all. Very true. I wish there was a way to cross reference too see how many of these sites they have registered.

From Jonny’s coverage of Monday afternoon in Belgium:

““We are talking about a lot money here,” said the judge.

Maître Masset did not entirely agree. “We are talking about a church that is a religion, and if you leave that out then you are missing the point.”

    Read more at:https://www.byline.com/project/28/article/537

Yay! It’s the famous “it says church over the door, and by definition we cannot commit a crime.” defense. That didn’t work so well in France, so I’m delighted to see it dusted off again and used with no modification whatsoever. Good.

    • B4you

there is more, here at the index: https://www.byline.com/journalist/jonnyjacobsen/project
Funny how they are trying to convince the judge about… Nothing!

    • Madison KinSmed

Jens, thank you for posting this. This information is very important because, although Belgium llaws are different than the U.S. laws, some of the same kinds of questions could be used by lawyers against the church here.

OT: Just came across this Jim Carrey video by serendipity. Note what he says about Prozac, supplements and also Tom Cruise.

    • Jimmy3

He must’ve studied medicine while shooting one of the Ace Ventura movies. That’s my best guess.

      • Juicer77

Or he’s reading off the back of the bottle of “supplements.” I’m curious to know what he was taking. Nosy me. I supplement regularly with chocolate, but that doesn’t help in the long run.

    • Juicer77

You have to admire his willingness to speak about mental illness. And he has a point about being honest about it – especially to yourself – and dealing directly with the problem. He is on dangerous territory when talking about using psych meds short term, it depends on the condition and the individual. But overall, good on him for talking openly about it and how he has dealt with it. I hope it encouraged others to seek quality medical help and follow up with their treatment.

      • daisy

I really liked your post. I am so happy to have the discussion as well. I get a little pissed however when people suggest short term usage only. You wouldn’t suggest to a diabetic to get off insulin. Schizophrenics have been known to kill off their meds. Society imposes their judgement on mental illness, way too much. I have gone off my meds several times after uncomfortable conversations with friends. Many even being nurses I have worked with. I always have to return to the meds and start the whole reaching therapeutic levels again. I end up being mad at myself for pretending I am a Dr. even for myself. My present insight has been hard won. DEPRESSION is not necessarily an emotional illness, it can be a chemical imbalance. Thank you for letting me rant.

        • Juicer77

No problem. I understand and sympathize completely. 🙂

        • Madison KinSmed

Posting late to this bc I just saw it but I also call BS on short term only usage for anti-depressants. Not only do we run the risk of suicide by going off of them, we also create medication-resistant depression.

          • daisy

I think like scientology, public awareness and education is catching up. I just wish celebrities would make it clear that they are talking about themselves only and present the other side as well. Maybe they have a right to their own truth, but people listen to them.

This Bunker was a good Bunker.

    • mon elle

Did something happen to make it shift past tense?

      • Jimmy3

No. I was referring to this particular Bunker article as “This Bunker”. It is a different Bunker every day.

        • mon elle

Whew. I was worried. Yes. This was a good Bunker.

I think insomnia in the bunker is an interesting phenomena. I ran across link below that referenced an ex-Scientologist peddling industrial chemicals as cure-all, was going to make snarky comment about it being ok to sell things that can kill as long as there are no mental side benefits that would put you in league with big pharma and now the original post is gone.

So I either hallucinated or someone deleted things really quickly. Oh well.

            • Jimmy3

Yeah, but you do it intentionally just to stir shit up. I play along when I’m bored, but even you must know your act is getting thin. And that your corrections are only to grief people. You were calling out someone for using ‘phenomena’ correctly. What she said describes what she believes to be a phenomenon that affects many different people and occurs on many different nights. In that context, it is accurately described as a ‘phenomena’. Plural.

You’re grasping at straws. Plural. With an ‘S’ attached on the end.

            • romanesco

You’re reading a whole fuck of a lot into a simple statement.

“Intentionally just to stir shit up?” Really? My “act” is getting thin? WTF? My corrections are “only to ‘grief’ people?” Seriously? Do you seriously, actually believe that? Jeez fucking Louise! Does it even ever occur to you that I may be doing them a favor? That if they sound literate that people will not stop reading after the first sentence, blowing them off as uneducated or careless?

            • Jimmy3

              yas

Report from Adelaide – via email (there was a photo but I’m having trouble downloading it – similar to the one Tony posted)

Thank you so much – it was a great night! We had lots of people
which was fantastic and the question and answer session went really
well. I haven’t had a chance to read the comments at the bunker but Tony
started his article talking about it which was fantastic!

A lot of people mentioned seeing him on the Drum – and the owner of
his venue put an extra staff member on last night after she heard him on
the radio and thought it might be bigger than she had expected!

And afterwards many different groups of people were playing the “who
do you think were the scientologists” game. I am sure if they don’t out
themselves you will get to play too!

  • Tory Christman

Moxie Magee! Thank you!! What an honor to be a part of your fabulous Trouble Maker with ALL of those
a m a z i n g women. I love the song, the lyrics, seeing all the courageous ones who have taken the time to STAND UP! Thank you Tony, too, and every single person here at the Bunker! Tick Tock is right! 🙂 Oh boy….:) Tory/Magoo

    • Juicer77

At first I thought they had used your voice for the “Tick Tocks.” 🙂

      • Tory Christman

Naw…..but I loved that they had the Tick Tock in it. I began that many, many years ago
back when I was getting “Fair Gamed” pretty heavily. One day I got in my car, my rear
view mirror had been 1/2 sprayed pink, and fell off while I was driving. I drove right to Pep
boys, who I had filled in one man about their actions. I asked: “Do you think this was done
        by gangs or Scientology?”
He peeked in, stood up and said: “It was done by Scientology!”
I asked: How do you know?
He: “Because you have a great radio and things in the back seat gangs would have taken”.

That night I went home and began posting on the Net: “To David Miscavige—
You can do your creepy things to we exposing you. However, here are the FACTS:
Karma IS Karma…and someone IS going to do something that will shock you and be
THE least expected person to do so. Tick Tock, Tick Tock: Time IS on **Our** side!

Shortly there after Tom Cruise did the jumping on Oprah’s couch, and soon after telling
Matt Lower of the Today Show: “I KNOW The source of psychiatry—YOU DO NOT” (and putting down the actor for taking female medication). The media began calling me asking “What happened to Tom Cruise?” I was happy to fill them in. DUH! Way to go, Dave 🙂

And thanks for adding that to the song, too. Makes my day!! 🙂

        • TheHoleDoesNotExist

Mr hole and I crack up Every time we listen to it. I had so much fun adding it, as well as the helicopter and thunder, and Artoo45 came up with putting clock in the vid.

    • TheHoleDoesNotExist

Hi Tory. Soooo glad you like it! We had a blast making it. It’s been a helluva year, hasn’t it? Thank you for all you do. We could only get in a few of so many

      • Tory Christman

TheHoleDoesNotExist…You have NO idea how much this means to me, having spoken out since July of 2000…and for many years, there were only a few of us who WOULD say our names, exposing C of $. (I frankly only did as I thought, back then, the “net” consisted of about 50 people: I had NO idea how big it was!!) LOL! As you say, “We could only get in a few of so many”…that is music to my ears!
It’s true…years back there were so few, as far as the $cientology critic/ex’s community.
Now? There are sooooooooooo many. I love it!!

I love the song, too: Great job to each of you who helped create it. For me? What an honor. I cannot thank you enough. Hugs and more hugs, Tory/Magoo

        • TheHoleDoesNotExist

It’s a most awesome club, the Lovely Troublemakers Club. You’ve done soo much so long and I know what that takes Hugs back

    • 9001

Hi Tory. I must tell you I’ve named my kitten Magoo, after you. Thanks for all you do 🙂

  • Lighthouse

I love the Trouble Maker song, Moxie Magee and producers and all involved! I’m sending it to my family. It’s made my day.

GREAT JOB!!!!! Beautiful and so well done. You lifted us up yet again Hole, and I thank you for that!

I’ve watched it a bunch of times and want to say that, like me (a veteran “troublemaker”), many of the women in the video were simply doing what they felt passionate about, or acting on a practical impulse to help, or fighting for their own integrity in challenging circumstances. I get the feeling that both Leah and THDNE were using the term somewhat tongue in cheek in that sense 🙂

These are strong, creative, intelligent human beings with integrity, who happened to be women. Thank you Hole for giving us the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate that together. And with a really fun and catchy tune and great images. I hope many many people get the chance to see it. You are wonderful ! Big hug 🙂

Hi Beth! Yeppers, tongue in cheek. The “revival tent churchy” sound in the chorus is too. I grew up hearing that term used against women Not when they were causing trouble, but speaking up and/or standing up to help fix the source of the trouble. To this day, if a woman asks for equal pay at her job, she runs the risk of being labelled a troublemaker and losing her bread and butter. In scientology, misogynists had free reign, and whether under Hubbard or Miscavige rule, it was a nightmare.

Thank you from the heart for sitting down and putting your thoughts in writing. We all have had women we have known or read about that inspired us in some way. So glad you enjoyed it – said it before, it was a labor of love. Hugs back at ‘ya!
