‘Going Clear’: Sara Goldberg on how Scientology turned her own daughter against her

Sara_Goldberg_GC2
Just three days to go until HBO airs Alex Gibney’s documentary, Going Clear, and we have another screenshot from the film, this time featuring Sara Goldberg, who really adds an emotional wallop to the movie.

The great Joe Childs at the Tampa Bay Times told Sara’s story last year and how she faced a dilemma forced on her by Church of Scientology officials. Because of Scientology’s toxic “disconnection” policy, the church forced Sara to make a terrible choice.

There’s a big backstory to that choice. We’ll try to sum it up quickly. Sara and her husband, Sheldon Goldberg, were loyal OT 8’s, having achieved the highest level of spiritual advancement in Scientology. Sara’s son, Nick Lister, had grown up in Scientology. But he was also friends with a man, Matt Argall, who had befriended and did some business with Mike Rinder, a former Scientology spokesman. In 2009, Rinder cooperated with the St. Petersburg Times in its blockbuster series, “The Truth Rundown.” In the eyes of Scientology leader David Miscavige, that made Rinder one of the biggest enemies of the church, a “suppressive person” or “SP.” Argall, however, hired Rinder to do some work for him, and also hired Nick Lister. Through that job, Lister got to know Rinder.

The church found out about the connection, and confronted Lister — he wasn’t supposed to be having any kind of communication with an “SP,” or he faced being declared a suppressive himself. Lister promised not to have further contact with church enemies. But later, he admitted that he was still talking to Argall. The church came down hard, declaring him suppressive, essentially excommunicating Lister from the church.

That happened in September 2010, Sara tells us. And her son’s “declare” put the entire family at risk. Not only were Sara and her husband OT 8s, but her daughter, Nick’s older sister Ashley, was also a dedicated Scientologist. By church policy, all of them were supposed to cut off all ties with Nick or they, in turn, faced the risk of being declared suppressive. But Nick lived with Sara and Sheldon, and they weren’t about to kick him out. The church allowed them to spend some time trying to “handle” Lister, encouraging him to get back into the good graces in the church. Meanwhile, his sister, Ashley, also didn’t cut off ties, at least for a few months.

Sara tells us that eventually changed. Ashley suddenly announced that she was disconnecting from Nick, her brother — and on Christmas Day, 2010.

“The whole thing has been such a nightmare,” Sara says. But things were only going to get worse.

Lister did try to get back into Scientology’s good graces — doing what is called the “A to E Steps,” a series of tasks to reverse a declare. He met with the church’s then spokesman, Tommy Davis, who threatened Lister that “We are going to squash you like a bug,” but then told him if he followed a strict program of reeducation, he could make things right. But eventually, Lister grew tired of the hoops he was asked to jump through. He gave up on the A to E Steps.

Into 2012, that meant there was growing pressure on Sara and Sheldon Goldberg to either “handle” Nick or cut him out of their lives. And the church kept putting on the pressure, making Sara and Sheldon each go through “amends” programs to make up for their own failings regarding Sara’s son. Nick’s drinking problem was only making things worse, and in June, he threatened to kill himself. Sara assured Mike Ellis, Scientology’s “International Justice Chief” that she had the situation under control, but Ellis was blunt: It was time for Sara to cut her suppressive son out of her life.

Sara wasn’t going to let the church tell her to abandon her own son. So Ellis then ordered Sara and Sheldon to go through a “committee of evidence,” a sort of internal Scientology justice court, in September 2012. This would decide their fates.

We’re going to show you something now we don’t think has been made public before. It’s the letter Sara’s daughter, Ashley, sent in to the committee of evidence in support of her mother and stepfather, explaining in heavy Scientology jargon why her parents had done their best in the awkward family situation, shielding her from her suppressive brother…

For Sheldon & Sara Goldberg

Re: Sheldon & Sara Goldberg

Dear Sir,

In the 4+ years since my brother’s cycle began, Sheldon and Sara have done everything they could to keep the cycle and its inherent entheta off my lines while they were trying to handle my brother. It was obvious to almost anyone that something was going on, but they never put anything about on my lines, I never got any entheta from them about Nick, the church or Scientology. I didn’t really know the extent of what was happening until he was declared because it was deliberately kept off my lines.

I was dealing with my own entheta at the time with a very sick child, so not only did they keep my brother’s cycle off my lines, they did everything they could to help me and my family do better in life. Sheldon audited me for several intensives and got a full repair program completed so I could start my Purif. My mother (Sara) got me back on course at Flag on the basics, they frequently help me with my daughter and her therapies, they help me with her if I need to go in session and consistently help whenever else they can.

To my knowledge, since my brother’s declare, has successfully used her admin training to build a very successful company that uses LRH and Scientology tools to help its employees turn their lives around (such as the drug booklets and the Way to Happiness). I also know that Sheldon went to the Ship and some extensive handlings and came back VVGIs and did whatever program they sent him home with. He has done numerous auditing cycles and facilitated auditing for my husband and I over the last few years.

Whenever I have seen Sheldon and Sara recently, they have been very uptone and theta.

This is true,

Ashley Epstein

[Some definitions for those not up on Scientology-speak: my brother’s cycle = the ethics cycle that Nick is on, or the time since he first got into trouble; entheta = enturbulated theta, the opposite of good feeling or good news, it’s bad publicity or bad press for Scientology or bad vibes from a suppressive person, any bad influence that might keep a Scientologist from advancing his or her case; my lines = Ashley’s communication lines, the people she interacts with that affect her sphere in Scientology; intensives = auditing is purchased in blocks of 12.5 hours, known as an “intensive”; Purif = the Purifican Rundown, Scientology’s unscientific “detoxification” program of heavy niacin intake and hours of daily sauna use; Flag = The Flag Land Base, Scientology’s spiritual headquarters in Clearwater, Florida, where many courses are delivered; the Basics = L. Ron Hubbard’s essential original books and lectures, edited and redesigned for a 2007 re-release; Admin = Hubbard’s voluminous rules for how to run an organization, used religiously by Scientology businesses; the Ship = Scientology’s private cruise ship, the Freewinds, where OT 8 and other courses are offered; VVGIs = Very very good indicators, signs that a Scientology process has produced desired results; uptone and theta = high on the Tone Scale of human emotion, flowing with life force.]

Even if the language is foreign to you, it should be pretty obvious how much Ashley is in support of her mother here. She knows how hard Sara has been trying to juggle this almost impossible situation.

After their hearing, they had to wait several months for a decision. In the meantime, they were still able to remain intact as a family. Even though Ashley had disconnected from her brother, she could still spend time with Sara, and on Mother’s Day 2013, Ashley took her mom out for breakfast and a pedicure.

On the morning of July 26, Ashley sent an email to her mother, saying that she’d signed up her daughter for a beach activity. “It is Sept 21st in Jacksonville Beach. I sent an email to the owner of the condo we stayed at last time asking if the condo is available that weekend. You want to come with us?”

Later that day, however, Sara received a letter from the Clearwater justice chief, Cara Golashesky. It was the findings of the committee of evidence, and it was a notice that both Sara and her husband had been declared.

“Your Committee of Evidence Findings and Recommendations recommend you be labeled suppressive. There is a declare order issued on you now to that effect,” the letter said.

Sara and Sheldon Goldberg had been expelled from Scientology because they refused to cut off ties from Sara’s own son. And now, all Scientologists would be required to disconnect from them.

When Sara went over to see her daughter, Ashley said the ethics office had been trying to call her and she asked what was happening. And that’s when Sara told her that she and Sheldon had been declared. When Ashley asked if Sara would appeal the decision, Sara admitted that she wasn’t going to disconnect from her own son. She also admitted that she’d begun reading critical information about Scientology on the Internet.

“You’re reading the Internet!” her daughter blurted. Sara tried to calm her down with a walk around the block. But then Ashley informed her mother that she was disconnecting from her. In the film, Sara describes the moment in vivid detail.

But what isn’t in the film are examples of how Sara didn’t give up on her daughter. Three days later, she sent this email to Ashley about her granddaughter that was suddenly out of her life…

She is not going to understand “disconnection.” Not ever seeing her Nana and G-pa could have a detrimental effect…Shel and I would like to see her for just a little time before you leave for Seattle this coming Saturday. Ten or 15 minutes is all I ask. You can let me know how to arrange it…She is an innocent little girl caught in the middle. If you want someone else to reply to this, that is fine too…You know how much she loves us and would not understand never seeing us again. Love, Mom

Sara continued to send emails, still hoping to go on the trip to Jacksonville in September, still hoping that Ashley would attend a wedding in Denver with them. Into August, she kept sending emails and handwritten letters, including this one…

August 10, 2013

Dear Ashley,

I had a realization today. I wondered what I could have done or would have done differently over these last months since our comm ev. I realized all I would have done is love you and [her granddaughter] more and harder. I would have spent even more time with you and been thankful for all of it. It was one thing I never fully confronted and that was losing you and [her granddaughter]. No mother should ever have to go thru this loss of a child and grandchild. I love you more and more and always did and will. Mom.

But then, the next day, on August 11, she finally received a reply from her daughter…

AshleyEpsteinEmail2

Ashley Epstein has followed Scientology’s policy to the letter, and she has cut her suppressive mother and brother and stepfather out of her life.

As for Ashley’s side of things, she’s spelled that out in detail in a video the Church of Scientology has posted at its Freedom magazine website. The video, which accuses Sara Goldberg of being a “home wrecker,” tries to paint her as heartless for siding with her alcoholic son over her daughter. Ashley’s hyperventilating in the video is tough to watch. And Sara tells us she hasn’t been able to bring herself to see it.

“Now, it’s gone to this other level where I’ve become this enemy who is no longer really her mother, I’m someone to be Fair Gamed and destroyed,” she says, referring to Scientology’s legendary practice of retaliation against critics.

“My daughter and I were so close. It’s amazing to me what they’ve done. That they turned my daughter. That is scary,” she says. “That they could turn a beautiful and intelligent young woman against her mother is hard to believe. But they operate from fear. They want to scare people so that people back off.”

While it’s not really a consolation for how her family has been ripped apart, Sara says that in the year since Joe Childs first wrote her story, she’s heard from many people who tell her that she is the reason they have found the ability to walk away from the Church of Scientology.

“I’ve heard from so many people. They say, you’re the reason that I left.”

We want to add a coda to this story. It was pointed out to us that the spectacularly bad Twitter feed Scientology recently started in order to attack Going Clear, @FreedomEthics, posted a photograph of Sara Goldberg with what appears to be some kind of target on her face…

Take a closer look at the Twitter feed’s logo…

And here’s something interesting about Freedom. We wrote about the new editor of its Florida edition, John Sugg, when he took over in the summer of 2013. But then we noticed more recently that Freedom had said something about hiring an entire newsroom in Los Angeles.

And sure enough, last week, the first new “International Edition” under the new crew came out. It’s edited by someone named Jennifer Johnson-Lankheim, and it may be the dullest edition of Freedom ever published.

You may remember that just a couple of years ago, Freedom was brashly calling Marty Rathbun “Kingpin Rathbone” and the rest of the church management that was talking to the press his “Posse of Lunatics.” Or there was the issue that put a caricature of Paul Haggis and Lawrence Wright on the cover in a parody of a New Yorker cover, and which was actually handed out by volunteers outside the Conde Nast offices in New York.

Well, for some reason, Scientology leader David Miscavige has come to the conclusion that it makes more sense to hire some non-Scientologists (we think) and have them produce the most anodyne, somnambulant material imaginable. The cover story of Ms. Johnson-Lankheim’s first issue is a story bemoaning the fact that Americans don’t read more books. We’re not making that up.

And here’s how Ms. Johnson-Lankheim describes her first impression of Scientology itself: “One of the biggest surprises I’ve had in this job, and in the peek I get behind the scenes of Scientology, is the remarkable pool of talent in its religious order, and how the Church goes to great pains to train and develop its people. I work alongside them every day, and let me tell you: As an organization, Scientology is profoundly enterprising.”

Gosh, she sounds so reasonable. So we decided, since she included her email address in a press release recently, that we’d see if she was as interested in her new employer as she made it seem. Here’s the message we sent her…

Jennifer,

Since the Freedom Ethics twitter feed is using the name of your magazine, I’m wondering how you feel about this tweet (attached), which shows Sara Goldberg with a target on her face?

You seemed very reasonable in your initial editor’s note in this week’s new issue. I’m hoping you can help me understand why Freedom thinks tweets like this are an effective way to win people over.

Sincerely,

Tony Ortega

Bonus photos from our tipsters

Speaking of Scientology magazines, one of our tipsters pointed out that the latest issue of Freewinds includes this photo of Her Royal Governess of the Vast Valley Territory, otherwise known as Nancy Cartwright, voice of ‘Bart’ on The Simpsons, holding her OT 8 certificate on the deck of Scientology’s private cruise ship. Yes, Nancy, you have finally achieved goddesshood, just as you told Bryan Seymour you would years ago!

Links of note

As you are well aware, every publication on earth is putting out a story about Scientology this week in advance of the Gibney documentary. We haven’t been saying much about them because most of them are going over subjects we’ve already covered at length here, and we have our hands full with our own countdown. But we do want to give a shout out to Sophie Gilbert of the Atlantic, who put together a really good piece about Scientology’s struggles with its image in the era of the Internet. Give it a look.

From Sophie Gilbert’s piece in The Atlantic

“Historically, Scientology’s default crisis-management mode has involved a combination of aggressive legal action…”

I recently heard how that squatter nanny was on some sort of list – can’t recall the name – banning her from filing a lawsuit without the consent of a higher judge since she’d previously filed so many frivolous lawsuits.

Any idea of how Scientology can get on that list? (Sigh…probably wishful thinking since it still has a few thousand members that can be influenced to file personal suits.)

    Re: “Lines.”

To me one’s ‘lines’ as in the sentence “…entheta off my lines” refers to one’s “communication lines”, not just about one’s journey up the bridge or sphere of influence in Scientology.

“Lines” would refer to any regular or established communication channel from anyone. It can also include the people themselves as a concept. So she is saying that Mom doesn’t discuss with me the problems her brother is having, it’s not talked about. She makes sure it doesn’t reach me, doesn’t talk to anyone about it where it might get back to me or upset me or upset anyone I’m in contact with.

    • generic sock account

I read as it a general term for “out of my life.” Not necessarily forced disconnection, but not having to hear about someone or deal with someone and whatever they’re going through, you could say they’re “off your lines.” Is that an accurate description?

      • Michael Leonard Tilse

Yea, pretty accurate. It’s who you are in touch with, personal, business, family. Like if I said that “Rachel is on my lines”! Then I would be saying we are in touch, talk or write, we are interacting. If I said “That SP is finally off my lines” that would mean that I don’t have to interact with him nor does anyone that I interact have anything to do with him that affects me. Including hearing about his problems or being called upon to handle some issue.

        • generic sock account

  • Gene Trujillo

Calling some HER a “homewrecker” after THEY enforced disconnection to destroy her family appears to be an instance of what Hubbard referred to as “accusing people of overts one is committing oneself” or the psychoanalysts might have called “projection”, then turning it around and blaming their victim. They are very good at turning things around on people like that as they destroy people’s lives without remorse…

    • HillieOnTheBeach

“…appears to be an instance of what Hubbard referred to as “accusing people of overts one is committing oneself”…”

Ironically, it’s one of the characteristics Hubbard claimed defined an SP. Far be it for scilons to have a shred of self-awareness to catch on.

      • Gene Trujillo

Hubbard appears to have been what he called a “merchant of fear”, using fear of eternal damnation (without allowing his work to be independently verified) to dominate and enslave his followers.

  • RK

I am very fortunate that I left before my children became old enough to be recruited by the Church of Scientology. I am fortunate that I never had to make that kind of choice or allowed the Church to use my family to challenge my loyalty. It is obvious by the videos that Sara’s daughter has been told that it is Sara’s fault that her daughter no longer has a relationship with her grandparents. That she is angry and upset, it is clear, but she has been directed to point that anger towards her mother and not the Church’s actions as the source of the destruction of her family. She is angry because her mother “chose her brother over her.” My goodness, the selfishness and sense of entitlement is just amazing. My question for her daughter would be, “Why would it ever be morally OK for any employer or Church to force a mother to choose one child over another?” Another – “Why would a Church order a mother to abandon a child in distress?” And another – “Why did Ashley abandon her brother who needed her and her parents who were helping him?” I hope she eventually sees her way through this.

Has anyone tried to comment on the Scientology videos on youtube? Do they just get deleted?

    • generic sock account

If they come from Scientology or Scientologists, they usually have a moderation setting. And what you have to say will probably not be approved. But there are many more Scientology videos posted by critics that you can freely comment on.

      • ThePanopticon

Figured. Just infuriating not to be able to respond directly. The Ashley Goldberg vid is the only one I’ve watched because I don’t want to give them views but I wanted to see that one. It makes me really furious.

        • flyonthewall

Just got done watching it. The most bizarre thing I’ve seen in a long time. I think it totally goes over CoS’s head that someone who watches their weirdo videos and doesn’t know anything about Scientology will just think that they’re all crazy.

Just did a quick Google search on “Marty Rathbun” and “Mike Rinder” and noted that the Scientology paid attack ads are again coming up at the top of the page (after mysteriously vanishing last evening.)

This tends to support the idea that these paid attack ads coming and going is related to the budgeted amount tied to each keyword being used up within an allotted period, causing the ads to automatically stop, until the next budget period begins. One can budget $$$ spend on Google paid ads over the course of certain hours, days, months etc. on an almost infinite continuum of choices. The church has probably capped the amount of budgeted spend on a 24 hour period at different amount for different keywords. Some of their paid attack ads seem to appear 24 / 7 so the budgeted spend is most likely quite high for those (or the number of searches various widely among the keywords…or some combination of both.)

This also tends to support the idea that the geniuses in Scientology leadership are too stupid to realize that their attack ads are fueling the flames of interest in the Going Clear documentary set to air on HBO at 8:00pm EST this Sunday.

    Nice work you twits.

    • And that points to a solution. If every Bunkerite was to do those searchs everyday, and click on the paid link, it would help use up the cash quicker, leaving the search clear of Scientology ads for a longer period of time.

    • They also seem unaware of the fact that a significant proportion of these ads will be served to people like us (whose Google profiles show great interest in Scientology).

  • Dave Reams

I don’t understand !!! What possible benefit could Scientology derive from treating loyal followers like this?

Stealing money from parishioners for a fraudulent “solution” that does not work as described in church sales literature?

Getting as much cash as possible from each mark before they find out the whole thing is a con?

Threatening those who have already figured out the whole thing is a con so they are afraid to publicly warn others?

    • Draco

You are trying to apply logic and reason to Scientology. They don’t go together.

    • TheHoleDoesNotExist

It is all about keeping the money flowing. Scientology is Only about sucking the most money out of its customers at the highest profit margins. The problem has always been that those profit margins (70-85%) are not sustainable. Punishment and terror are used whenever a customer wants to go home and take his assets with him. If they have friends or family still forking over their cash, the leaving customer becomes an enemy their friends and family must disconnect from – it doesn’t matter the reason. Scientology will always provide something. They are now down to fewer and fewer whales who still have any assets left. The only other ones left are the slaves who work for their eternity, thinking they will be paid in product and services eventually – but rarely do. Insane? Of course.

  • dagobarbz

In Scientology, “reasonable” is not a Good Thing, and you should avoid telling them they seem reasonable as they will not view that as a compliment. 😉

By the way…every time someone clicks on one of the links to a Scientology paid attack ads, the church account is automatically billed for whatever amount the church agreed to pay for the keyword that generated that particular ad appearing at the top of the page.

    Heh.

    • cdub

If everyone clicks those paid ad links constantly it drains their account with Google with no benefit to the church.

      • Anonymous

        That would be click fraud.

On days of disconnection madness, I have to go back and look again at what I’ve learned. Otherwise, I could just get lost in the rage and sadness. What we’re looking at is fanaticism, call it religious fanaticism if you like. Here’s three articles that helped me understand a little better what’s going on, how does it happen, why. The 2nd and 3rd articles place addiction and fanaticism side by side for comparison, and include opting out suggestions.

The 1st article is especially interesting to me and may be of interest as well. Initially, it defines “religious trauma syndrome, and why it needs to be addressed now more than ever. Just as Jon Attack mentioned recently that cults have grown now to 5,000 by his count, not lessened, this author backs up what many of us have been trying to nail down – that Alex Gibney’s HBO “Going Clear” may begin an effective movement to change attitudes, laws, education and mental health solutions because the need is growing. Also important to note that there is never one size fits all solutions, just as there are no one size fits all causes.

“Some people say that terms like “recovery from religion” and “religious trauma syndrome” are just atheist attempts to pathologize religious belief.”

Winell: “Mental health professionals have enough to do without going out looking for new pathology. I never set out looking for a “niche topic,” and certainly not religious trauma syndrome. I originally wrote a paper for a conference of the American Psychological Association and thought that would be the end of it. Since then, I have tried to move on to other things several times, but this work has simply grown.

In my opinion, we are simply, as a culture, becoming aware of religious trauma. More and more people are leaving religion, as seen by polls showing that the “religiously unaffiliated” have increased in the last five years from just over 15% to just under 20% of all U.S. adults. It’s no wonder the internet is exploding with websites for former believers from all religions, providing forums for people to support each other. The huge population of people “leaving the fold” includes a subset at risk for RTS, and more people are talking about it and seeking help. For example, there are thousands of former Mormons, and I was asked to speak about RTS at an Exmormon Foundation conference. I facilitate an international support group online called Release and Reclaim which has monthly conference calls. An organization called Recovery from Religion, helps people start self-help meet-up groups.”

Scientology doesn’t erase mental health imbalances, it creates them, then charges you to pretend they erased them, them blames you for not acting well and balanced, and finally tries to destroy you for leaving to regain a happy balance in your life. Scientology is a fanatical scam and it’s time for Sara’s family and Sid’s and Lori’s and all families to finally get some real help instead of excuses and platitudes. I want to see the sequel, “Going Home” March 29, 2016.

“As you are well aware, every publication on earth is putting out a story about Scientology this week in advance of the Gibney documentary.”

Tony is entitled to a measure of dramatic lisence, but I don’t think he would make a statement like this unless he had reason to believe that a tsunami was coming. That tsunami would naturally crest on Sunday with coverage of Going Clear as a major TV event, maybe in some cases with companion news pieces. I hope so very much. The LA Times has been too quiet for too long, and it’s time for them to confront the Phantom Menace of Hollywood and Hemet.

Searching Google for “Going Clear Documentary” brings up 8,200,000 hits. (Eight million two hundred thousand.)

Scanning through the first TWENTY PAGES of offered links verifies that virtually every one goes to an article appropriate to the exact words searched.

Except for paid attack ads and a very, very few PR pieces from the church…the coverage is almost universally laudatory about the Alex Gibney film.

This is quite something to behold.

      • Anonymous

In the 8 minutes since I wrote the above post, the number of links offered by Google in response to a search on “Going Clear Documentary” increased by 80,000 (eighty thousand.)

I agree, Doc. There has been so much publicity and so many articles surrounding the premiere of Going Clear that I started trying to remember when this had happened before. I reviewed some lists of documentaries and I could only find three in the last thirty years that I recall receiving this level of buzz and national press: Bowling for Columbine, The Thin Blue Line and Super Size Me. When each of these documentaries was released, it was the thing everyone talked about for weeks.

There were several others (such as Hoop Dreams, Man on Wire and The Times of Harvey Milk) that received excellent reviews and a reasonably large viewership but they didn’t spark a national conversation.

This indicates to me that Going Clear isn’t just a documentary film, it’s a cultural phenomenon.

$cientology has managed to dam up criticism of itself for a long time by various means of intimidation or dead agenting. I use the metaphor of a dam that they’ve held back criticism for a long time. The level of the ill will behind that dam is, indeed high. Once released, all of that will come flowing down upon $cientology, sweeping the cult into a pool of derision and anger from the public.

By Tuesday, March 31, we’ll see where the tsunami is breaking. Give the locals a day or 2 to write a comprehensive review and to pass it by the local lawyers. Those nationally syndicated will take about the same time to pass their work by their lawyers. Then the wall of water will crash down and sweep away the unsuspecting clams.

The clampire will use this to get everyone behind the walls of the fort and to raise money, but that will just drive many to watch the show. Expect Gibney and Wright on a lot of talk shows.

Going Clear is not the stake in the vampires heart, but it is a lot of nails in the coffin lid.

Although I don’t meet, nor care to, Tony’s journalistic standards, I am going to post about something I recall reading about the time I got out.
There was a recognized Human Right’s group that gave an award every year to recognize the worst Human Right’s group. About the year 2004 or 5 It was won by Scientology, followed in second place by the Mafia.
It did not last long on the net, for reasons that all of us could easily guess.

From Huff Post. Can’t see this enough! — Erin Whitney

In January, both Gibney and Wright told Variety that they hold Cruise and John Travolta, another famous Scientology figurehead discussed in the film, responsible for “not demanding change” in the Church.

On Monday, Gibney echoed that sentiment: “He can espouse his beliefs, that’s fine. But not to address the allegations of abuse seems to me palpably irresponsible.

“Cruise is the big kahuna and that’s why we’ve gone to the trouble of
calling him out. We believe that he has a responsibility to say something
    about the abuse.”

To me it seems like this “religion” is nothing more than large scale organized sociopathy. Anything that relies on brainwashing, threats, fear and absolute control falls under that category to me. Kind of like terror organizations. To the Goldbergs, my condolences. I hope you find peace and happiness. Please consider reporting the photo with the target to authorities. Any and all things on the record help..

I hope you are getting the emotional and family support you need. Not being in now means you can enjoy modern medicine. Please allow yourself to do so as you rightfully grieve. You deserve it.

    • Sara Goldberg

      Thank you eucliditis.

Sara, I pray that your family will be reunited soon. I cried when you told your story in the movie. My heart is with you.

When Larry Anderson left the cherch, his interaction with Thommy Davis is point blank. As reported here, by Radio Paul, Davis on the cherch policy of “disconnection.” Contrasted with his appearances as Spokesman for The Church of Scientology, where he’s lying his arse off. About official cherch “disconnection policy.”

The lying / acceptable truth / BS that flows from church leadership (even those like Tommy that have left) is a never ending source of amazement.

This habit of lying, dressed up as something noble and clever, runs throughout the core of Scientology and is even baked into the very foundation of the book “Dianetics, the Modern Science of Mental Health.”

That Dr. Hubbard, he was quite the humanitarian, no?

    • 1subgenius

There is something odd about that site.
      They praise with faint damnation.

bleh, same here, come to find out.

  • Michael Leonard Tilse

The Atlantic piece was really good.

One thing I notice that is VERY different. These stories are in depth, with references and interviews. Not sound bites or one paragraph treatments. Not just one or two but almost every one of them. That in itself is amazing.

    • 1subgenius

I cited it elsewhere but they have a great piece on Alcoholics Anonymous, which shares much with Scientology and Narconon, including inflated statistics, preventing people from getting science based medical care, and the philosophy that if it doesn’t work it’s your fault.
But the trolls were on me about how “craplantic” the site was on the Scientology piece.

    • 1subgenius

I will always be indebted to the dead-tree version of The Atlantic for an article they did on the Rolling Stones tour of around 1970.
In particular they had the recipe for the Tequila Sunrises served on the jet (which I will never forget, until I do).

      2 oz Tequila
      1 oz Gin
      3 oz orange juice
      Dash of Grenadine
Served in a tall glass wrapped in paper towel secured with rubber bands

Doesn’t get any more Pulitzer-worthy than that.

      • Vaquera

        Gin?

        • 1subgenius

          Thanks for noticing, yes, Gin.
Can you even imagine crossing the craziness of tequila with the juniper berry psychedelic properties of gin?
          If not, try it.
Reminds me of a story a friend told me about a guy he knew who ordered a “gin and vodka”.
“Gin and vodka!!??” my friend remarked.
They guy replied “Yeah, you don’t expect me to drink it straight, do you?”
          It’s like that.

          • Vaquera

            I’m gin-intolerant. yech.

    • Mymy88

Yes, the media is finally starting to get down to business with this cult. Or you could say, the media is finally getting down and dirty with this cult, which is the level you need to be on if you want to deal with the little demon(s).

  • Dibythesea

I am trying to get through to a troll (Elle) on the Atlantic website.
I can’t figure out how to imbed the screen shot of it though.

    • Free Minds, Free Hearts

elle is a troll. Elle is different and she comments here.

      • Dibythesea

My bad. I did wonder about that? Thanks!

        • Free Minds, Free Hearts

I wondered too when I first saw Elle commenting here!

          • Mymy88

Right, elle the $cien (imo), does not capitalize the first letter of her name (e). The Elle that posts here at the Bunker does. They are definitely two different people.

        • Mymy88

          Agreed.

          • shasha40

Although it can be fun to watch , from a distance . That article and those comments display exactly why I’m here . I have been down the rabbit hole ( and still ” Going ” ) but I don’t like to have to weed through the BS and lack of fact checking . .. I could go on. So nope , come on into the Bunker , lurkers , not sures , just be safe about your exit plan , but Please , Blow !

    • Mymy88

elle posts on every news story about ‘Going Clear’, and she’s been doing so for weeks. I’m not talking about the Bunker “Elle” that posts here. The $cien elle that posts on all these blogs in support of $cien does not capitalize the first letter of her name (e). I believe she has been put up to doing this by $cien, naturally.

  • Super Power Wogsy

My heart sincerely goes out to the Goldberg family. All I can say is hang in there. I remember when I was waiting to be security checked at Flag, and I had this “intrusive” thought telling me I was so happy that my family members were not Scientologists. Shortly before that my phone was taken away from me by security, and I was sec checked about my google search history. The ivory tower of illusion always crashes, and it did for me that day. I really do hope Sara gets to see her daughter and grandbaby soon. This fucking cult is sick.

    • Sara Goldberg

      Thank you Super

      • Your segments in Going Clear are the most emotionally powerful in the film. I know that you were simply being yourself, but I cannot thank you enough for your courage to be a part of this. Hubbard’s warped policies brushed up against my life briefly in an ugly and bizarre incident more than thirty-five years ago. I’ve never forgotten. I can’t even begin to imagine what you’re going through here and now. May your family be reunited soon.

“Thomas Lifson, editor and publisher, calls himself a recovering academic. After graduating from Kenyon College, he studied modern Japan, sociology, and business as a graduate student at Harvard (three degrees) and joined the faculty at Harvard Business School, where he began the consulting career that was to lead him away from academia. He also taught sociology and East Asian studies at Harvard and held visiting professorships at Columbia University and the Japanese National Museum of Ethnology. As a consultant, he has worked with major companies from the United States, Japan, Europe, Asia, and Australasia at the nexus of human, organizational, and strategic issues.

A Democrat by birth, Thomas became more conservative in adulthood as reality taught him that dreams of perfecting human society always run smack into human nature.

In 2003 he founded American Thinker.” http://www.americanthinker.com/static/about_us.html

Off topic, but still a little bit on: I’m just home from work, have my feet up, drinking a hot coffee and reading the book Bettyville by George Hodgman.. It’s a memoir about a guy who’s lived and worked as an editor in NYC for years and who goes back to a small town in Missouri to care for his 90 year old mom, Betty..

Betty has dementia but is still pretty darn astute.. George is not a particularly skilled caregiver, but he really loves his mom.. The guy is a great writer and I’m really enjoying his story.. And then I almost just gave myself first degree burns because he decided to take his mom to see Joaquin Phoenix in The Master.. I won’t spoil it for anyone, but suffice to say, Betty had a few things to say about Joaquin and The Master..

My point is, I tried to take a little vaca from scientology watching, but it just keeps pulling me back in..

So anyone know what happened with Meghan Fialkoff’s crowd-funding project for some sort of Scientology awards?
    I can’t find it.
When last reported, despite rich daddy, she had gotten $0.00 (nothing, not a cent) on a goal of $20K, with days or hours to go.
I predicted that daddy would swoop in to save the day, but inquiring minds want to know.

            • generic sock account

No. Don’t change anything. One time I was a newbie here and this one guy convinced me that I shouldn’t spend any money on new underwear, because it is a complete ripoff. He said I should buy and use saran wrap in lieu of new boxer-briefs, and I would save enough money to buy teh pokemon cards I’ve always desired.

It worked. He was right. It is swampy as hell, but he was right.

            • Elle

I was just thinking the ‘swampy’ thing when you said that! lol One time in middle school a friend of mine wanted to lose 5 pounds quick. She wrapped herself in saran wrap with a bikini on, got up on her roof and laid out on one of those reflector blankets; this was TX in July!! She almost had to go to the hospital. She did lose 3 pounds, though.

            • generic sock account

“Should I go back to ElleGee?”

            • ElleGee

HOTB: I already changed it. Thank you for your kindness. May I ask you, or anyone, how do I find out who gave me a down vote?

            • HillieOnTheBeach

I took too long to post and didn’t see beforehand.

Don’t worry about the downvote. Disqus, in a rare mood of cogency decided to nix the practice because comment sections everywhere always derailed over hurt feeling about them. They mean nothing but a puerile means to bully, annoy and troll. Nothing else.

            • ElleGee

Understood. Hadn’t ever gotten one so didn’t really know what to think other than I must have ‘offended someone’s sensibilities’. lol

You know Gee Whiz..hahhaa.. When I started on line I was Glib Wog..and everyone called me Glibby..

A person who doesn’t come here often informed me that that was her name and asked if I would change it.. Well, I did a lot of searching and she did have it for a LONG time and was an active critic on other sites..

So I changed to Baby ( it was a nickname given to me years ago..) and the rest is history..

I don’t know Elle, but I’ve started copying and pasting the crazy scientology xenu creation story when I see identifiable scientology defenders.. . They hightail it outta town when they see that..

Nose- nice link! thank you. I couldn’t get it in NY as WNYC’s “All Things Considered” wasn’t playing it at the prescribed NPR time listed. 🙂

  • Kim O’Brien

So i directed my Mother to this story …Going Clear is now chosen for her book club…my parents signed up for HBO to watch this …and now i need to buy booze for 25 of their closest friends who are coming over to their house to watch it . I am wrangling another 20 or so to my friends house to watch it ( i need to provide Patron and limes for that one) I might need to take out a loan LOL . This might not be a big deal for some …but mother is PISSED …like ..more than i am . Please believe me when i tell you …this story has INFURIATED her . She went over the top about some little ” runt” ( as she called DM ) Oh ..and she invited the Governor of Colorado over to the house …he lives a few blocks away and my parents socialize with him . Not sure if he is going ..but he will get an ear full either way . Never fuck with a grandmother and her grandchild …like …ever

    • NOLAGirl

      Never underestimate Bunker Power.

      Tick Tock Dave.

    • Michael Leonard Tilse

So cool! I hope the Governor does come over for it and not only watches the film but gets to talk with your Mom about it in depth.

      Love it.

    • Science Doc

Just thought about this. Parties in Colorado must be a little different these days, with more options.

      • Kim O’Brien

LOL …the gov. is not pleased …but i know he has smoked before 😉 and he likes the 14 MILLION $$ it brought in for the schools

        • shasha40

Win, win all around !!! Tax Scientology ! Reinvest in our kids .

    • TheHoleDoesNotExist

Ooooh Cheers! Senator Wyden might be interested in CO Governor’s thoughts about Tax Exemptions after seeing the film.

      • NOLAGirl

The kind of Senator willing to take on Co$ is the kind of politician I can support in a higher office. I am a huge supporter of brass balls. 🙂

        • shasha40

Platinum Maximussus’s balls . So happy those people still do exist ! 🙂

    • One Human

      • Kim O’Brien

OMG …THAT would be amazeballs .

        • TheHoleDoesNotExist

          Oh my. Oh MY.

          • Kim O’Brien

that might be too much ..like , sensory overload or something .

            • TheHoleDoesNotExist

If I had lots of cash just sittin’ around, I’d fly Sara to your house if she wanted to meet him. I’m hoping that all the mothers get to sit down with an entire panel of governors, then Senators, then Congress persons and make them listen. But that’s just me.

            • Michael Leonard Tilse

Congressional hearings into the tax status of scientology, televised before the world with all the ex-OSA, ex-RTC, ex-INT staff who know what goes on telling their stories and Dodging Malefactor being summoned to appear before and explain.

            • NOLAGirl

              *faints*

            • TheHoleDoesNotExist

              Me too. Be still, heart.

            • NOLAGirl

That would be like porn to me. LOL

Scientology before a Congressional hearing trying to explain their crimes, *dabs eyes with a tissue* would make me very emotional. Not to mention the watching party we’d have at our townhouse in the French Quarter.

    • Kim O’Brien

Ex. Governor Lamb and his wife are also now invited . I went to school with their kids and my parents do a hike with them every year in honor of a mutual friends grandson .

      • NOLAGirl

Oooo even better. Ex-Governors usually don’t have to bite their tongues as much. 🙂

      • ElleGee

TY NG! You and everyone else have been so kind. I truly do value my inclusion.

It’s time that everyone use the COS’s proper name, Church of Suppression!

    • Free Minds, Free Hearts

All right! I think it is a good idea although I was loathe to ask you to change your identify, ElleGee!

      • ElleGee

I don’t want there to be any confusion as to what I stand for and it isn’t Mind Control. Some posters may think its me so I went into Disqus and just put it back to how it was when I first came to the Bunker. Thank you to everyone who knew better. When I first saw the ‘elle’ crap, my heart sank, I have to admit.

        • Dibythesea

I am very sorry ElleGee. It was an honest mistake

          • ElleGee

No harm no foul. And no need to apologize.

        • Free Minds, Free Hearts

Well, if we were paying attention we knew! But it was subtle – I had noticed elle first then I noticed you and it took me a bit of time to realize the difference.

  • Baby

Oh Sara G.. There ain’t nothing I can do or say to make it go right for you.. but I bought this old photo from someone ( the image) and then digitally colored it.. So I will gift it to you.. ( and anyone one else who needs a smile)

But Sara .. Know this.. When Ashley comes home.. I will have Observer shoop on smiles on all of the clowns faces.. I don’t even have to wonder if she will.. I KNOW she would be honored to do it for you.. Love Baby
( and you can hang them side by side when she comes home..before and after)

This weeks Going Clear articles have been the best! Waking up every morn with a smile and ready to read.I now work with a scientologist, she admited it in the lunch room about 2 weeks ago out loud, everyone present got up and left, been trying to school them on what NOT to say,the good news is i have turned on so many people on to the bunker at work, so they get the real story! Thanks again Tony on a job well done

Tonight is the last night for seeing the movie in a theater in Hollywood! Arclight is showing this today is the last day. Heading over for a show…

Sunday can not come quick enough for me!

    • ze moo

They just finished shooting the last scenes and MI5 has started all the pre-{premature?} release hype. They can’t have edited it much or even added any music tracks. Worried much?

    • AintMizBahavin

i posted about that yesterday. it doesnt even look worth seeing and many of my family and friends who loved the first m.i. movies have vowed not to support this one until and unless dum dum cruise stands up and speaks out about lyingtology my response to them well you will be using that money for something else doesnt look like any of the hollyweird scis will stand up and speak out. 1. they will look like the liars and hypocrites they are. and 2. misvicious obviously has blackmail material on all of them or they would have spoken out long ago…

    • Observer

I wonder if the studio execs are as nervous about Going Clear as Captain Miscavige is. Tom Cruise is about to become a hissing and a byword.

      • NOLAGirl

There was something about advanced tickets being sold by some theatre chains, with a 2 for 1 deal I think, but you had to buy them by MAR 28! Mr. Hole read that and immediately wanted to know if he asked for a refund March 30, would he have to go to scientology arbitration?

I mean, how obvious is that?

        • Vaquera

          Jinx!!

            • TheHoleDoesNotExist

Always got read the fine print. Still, the movie’s not getting released in theatres until July.

        • Observer

Whoa! Sounds like the theater owners are nervous even if the studio isn’t.

          • TheHoleDoesNotExist

Somebody’s nervous. I do wonder if it was the theater owners. Now this sounds to me like an accident – a business accident – so where’s Tom?

      • Vaquera

I don’t remember who found and posted this yesterday (so apologies for not giving proper credit). Through, ahem, March 28th, one can get a free movie download with the advanced purchase of an MI5 ticket.

Hubbard received his reward for all of the evil he created. He died at the age of 74 with none of his faculties in tact. He was bat shit crazy when he dropped his body and David Miscavige will likewise get his reward. One day Sara and her family will be together again. Miscavige will have no family, no friends, and may just end up in a mental institution for the criminally insane.

waving at my bunkeroo family. hoping everyone is having a awesome day!!! is it me or does this week seem to be dragging by? lol then again it could be me being anxious for sunday to come. im disconnecting phones, disabling the bell on the door, and locking my self in front of the tv beginning at 7:50 waiting for “Going Clear” to come on. i have a few family and friends coming over to watch with me. so they can see first hand what ive been telling them for years about lyingtology and its bullcrap..

on another note i read Sarah story with tears in my eyes and for the life of me can not figure out why the still in don’t understand the biggest SP is the cult they belong to. every policy and tech they have is about suppressing people forcing them to think the way the cult tells them to think and not the way they should be thinking freely for themselves.

all “churches” have their critics!!! imagine what would happen to the world if they all had the same action ,reaction as sci when criticized ? Sarah i truly hope Ashley opens her eyes one day and one day soon by understanding that the she can be declared sp and her daughter will disconnect from her.. its a sad state of affairs for a child to turn on the very people who gave them life

I used to write nonsense like this . It helps a cult member attain a euphoric trance where all your worries melt away and you feel a calm serene feeling . I did it thousands of times . It also uses your imagination with critical and independent thought shut down and is delusional and very bad for logic , reason and your mental health. It FEELS very pleasant – but all that glitters is not gold . I am sure doing crack or meth “feels pleasant” too but I would not do them either .

This poor deluded victim thinks she has a miracle when she has a mistake . I pity her . She is enslaved by a dead madman for his sick bloated ego .

Dateline March 29, 2017. Headquarters of the Narional Cult Saftety Board. Preliminary report on the crash of the Church of Scientology. “We have successfully retreived the audio file from the cockpit voice recorder and made the following inescapable conclusions. The Cult’s Commodore, L. Ron Hubbbard, left the cockpit to take a Target 2. When he attempted to return he discovered that the door had been locked by his not so loyal officer Captain David Miscavige, who was spinning the altitude control knob on the autopilot all the way down and singing I’m a Big Boy Now from the old diaper commercial. The Cult ended in a controlled flight into terrain. The only survivors were those members who were under the radar.”

I’m afeared that Ms. Kelly won’t be well prepared and/or will strong arm the interview. I’m curious, but not sure I’m curious enough to actually figure out what channel Fox News is on.

      • Juicer77

If perchance FauxNews crosses the screen in my abode, I interject and crack wise.

    • Science Doc

That’s national TV coverage to a demographic that usually doesn’t learn about Scientology.

    • Couch_Incident

Hope he mentions Greta during the interview. The Fox News demographic will be shocked.

      • Mymy88

Heck, I think anybody would be shocked. I know I was. I took it very hard, but I got over it lol.

        • Couch_Incident

Pity Huckabee’s not on Fox anymore – maybe he’d declare her Satan’s minion

          • Mymy88

It wouldn’t have hurt to ask him, if he had still been there, right? What can you lose?

    • Juicer77

    • mockingbird

A Fox “News ” reporter ? Ugh !!! I hope they do more journalism than their usual far right fallacy and lie fest er “fair and balanced reporting ” . When I was starting exit counseling and saw rhetoric and logical fallacies I came up with the Fox News fallacy drinking game – whenever a Fox reporter uses a fallacy or stereotype take a drink – you should be dead before the night is over !!! Mike might be the most honest person they ever have on – even if he lies the entire time !!! I do not think he will lie the entire time but I am making a point . HE will have to bring the truth and avoid their spin . Fox hires women for looks not brains and encourages ugly talk from beautiful women . They get bottom of the barrel intelligence when there are millions of intelligemt women who ccould actually be journalists .They overflow with chauvanism . I hope Mike controls the interview and gets to make good relevant points .Many folks rate Fox as using the most spin.and outright lies to fool people .

    • Kim O’Brien

jesus Tony ..in one week ..you got me feeling bad for Marty ..AND watching Fox News 😉

Yeah, I hear ya Kim! LOL. (I have Faux News on right now.)

  • TheHoleDoesNotExist

That Jennifer Lynn Johnson-Lankheim, new Freedumb editor, sure has a problem remembering which name to use where. There’s a Jennifer Johnson who’s associated with the Church of Scientology, Santa Clara. And Steve Johnson is/was Director there.

She was Jennifer Johnson when working on Freedom Mag in October 2014. Seems she did an online test that didn’t diagnose her daughter properly, therefore, psychs and drugs and ADD/ADHD are bad or don’t exist. CCHR is right. Gee, doesn’t sound like a sci at all. The few courses that show up for Jennifer are ones that a staff member would do.

“After working with journalist Ray Richmond on the October 2014 Freedom Magazine feature ‘The Attention-Deficit Fraud,’ editor Jennifer Johnson was curious just how easy it is for a kid to get an ADD/ADHD diagnosis.”

      • TheHoleDoesNotExist

It’s a pretty common name, but when I first started checking out jennifer johnson-lankheim, I kept seeing blips of her name commenting on different articles. When I tried to open, they’d been wiped. Not a 404, just not available. That was my first clue.

I wonder what happened to Sugg? I don’t know who all the rest of the new crew is – but many of us from the Tampa area couldn’t believe Sugg would have done such a thing, either. Shaking head. And thanks.

She might postulate my MEST into a newtingness.

    • Sid

“she did an online test that didn’t diagnose her daughter properly”

She was able to determine the incorrectness of the diagnosis because she had a medical degree she downloaded from the internet. And she even looked up the term ADD on the CCHR website so she knew what it meant.

    • Free Minds, Free Hearts

Well researched, THDNE! So she is a total liar about not being a scilon. Just like the woman that Chris Shelton uses to deconstruct how the cult uses PR – she also said she was not a scilon, but indeed was.

        I’m not a Scientologist but… I’m not a Scientologist, but… I’m not a Scientologist but… I’m not a Scientologist but…

      • In my news archive, there is a letter to the editor in St. Pete’s Times where the person says “I am not a Scientologist”. I added the link to her completions. (Which was compiled years after the letter–didn’t see that coming, did you?)

        • Free Minds, Free Hearts

That’s why the screenshot is so crowded, it’s from some streaming site. BTW, between Beghe’s sense of humor and the way I notice he is graciously giving a lot of screen time to his costars (this season they’re saying a lot of lines of plot exposition that he used to say, but instead they’re speaking while he stands there) I’m ready to make him my boyfriend too, and I’m a straight guy!

Off topic, but I can’t seem to stop my fingers from typing this question:

What is there to prevent David Miscavige from doing the same thing with the IRS he did when he brought them to their knees years ago? Should they even hint at revoking Davids license to steal.

In other words, with literally hundreds of millions of dollars at his disposal, and at least, say, 15,000 practicing Scientologist’s in the USA, what would prevent David Miscavige from initiating 2500+ lawsuits against the IRS all over again, and sending out a few hundred (if not thousand) private investigators to dig up dirt on IRS agents all over the country again, here and now, in 2015?

What has changed at the IRS that would render this Scientology tactic void of judicial power? Anything?

    The Documentary, Going Clear?

If anything, our present (2015) IRS budget conditions/constraints would likely lend itself to being brought to its knees, once again. Which inability to answer such question myself, has me posting the question here, where far brighter minds than mine, I hope and trust can answer it.

    • EnthralledObserver

He most certainly will continue to try old tricks that have worked for him in the past. He can’t grow, he’s emotionally and intellectually stunted, and the tech has no wriggle room for growth either, so it’s ALL he can do. The IRS will expect it – but unlike Davey Makemerich – they can learn and grow. We’ll have to have faith that the result will be different because of this fundamental difference.

      • When times are tough, he pulls out the old videos of the Portland Crusade, which had little effect on the court maneuvering, and turned a massive loss into a large but private settlement payment.

    • NOLAGirl

The kind of evidence of violations of their IRS agreement that exist today didn’t exist when they hammered them the last time. Not to mention the PR foot-bullet it would be.

            • NOLAGirl

              LOLOLOL!! Thank goodness I don’t huh? 😀

            • Baby

Well, let’s just say I came here with one eye closed.. xo

    • Shanester

Two words: Brain Drain. It was Marty Rathbun who negotiated with the IRS. David Miscavige certainly does not have the smarts to do any sort of high level negotiations. He literally has jailed or driven away all people competent enough to perform such tasks.

He might try to recreate the 1993 scenario with lawsuits and PIs and such, but, without the actual intelligence and guidance of his deputies, he would be unable to out-maneuver the IRS like Marty did last time.

      • Keep in mind that when Dave and his posse took over, they were 20-somethings raised in CoS, and not always the best and brightest.

        • Shanester

You are correct, but I maintain that Dave can only follow LRH’s playbook — he seems incapable of original initiatives. Maybe he could get a posse of lawyers to negotiate with the IRS (if it came to that) but all he could do would be putting the dirty tricks in play and then crassly making demands of the IRS. Without the Marty filter, I predict it wouldn’t fly.

      • Larry

Shanester, I do so hope you are correct. My lingering fear being ‘money trumps intelligence’ where our American Judicial System is concerned. Which fear is historically justified.

On the other hand, picturing little David Miscavige trying to personally organize any semblance of a large scale judicial attack against the IRS, does give me pause, for relief.

        Thank you.

    • Billy Bob

Co$ only had a quarter billion last time. Now Co$ has three billion. The IRS tries to be cost effective.

      • So, if the IRS smashes CoS, there’s a bigger jackpot…

        • Billy Bob

          Green items.

    • Anonymous

“What is there to prevent David Miscavige from doing the same thing with the IRS he did when he brought them to their knees years ago?”

Answer: A now documented 65 year history of abuse towards church members that fails to forward an actual religious purpose, inures income for the private gain of top leadership, provides excess benefits for a tiny cabal of top leadership and promotes of an internal organizational culture that is a proven failure toward “lessening neighborhood tensions; eliminating prejudice and discrimination; defending human and civil rights secured by law; and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency.”

Besides the above, everything has been cool.

      http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Charitable-Organizations/Exemption-Requirements-Section-501%28c%29%283%29-Organizations

      • dagobarbz

        Yeah?
That didn’t do the Garcias any good.

        • Anonymous

The Garcia’s were not involving the IRS…they were pursuing a civil case for torts and related claims. Most of those types of cases have failed and for predictable reasons.

          • dagobarbz

Garcia shows that the cult still has enough mojo to force someone into unfair arbitration. And the IRS? HAH! HAH! HAH!
The IRS doesn’t have the stones.

            • Anonymous

The comparison between a single civil case, argued on a predictably incorrect basis, to the administrative , legal and investigative resources of the IRS is not meaningfully useful.

            • dagobarbz

You’re not seeing the Big Picture. The cult uses the same influence to fix civil suits. It’s the same thing on different scales.

      • Larry

Thank you for the thoughtful response.

Question: Are you saying/implying the IRS will agree to withstand the financial demands of thousands and thousands of individual lawsuits against it, brought all across the nation, requiring the IRS to fund millions (if not 10s or 100’s of millions of dollars to fight them), in order to appease the public’s outrage regarding the abuses of Scientology on American citizens?

        • Anonymous

          Don’t know what will happen.

Except for the cash reserves, the position of the church is significantly worse than it was almost 2 1/2 decades ago on almost every front.

Back then, Scientology was largely a cipher among the general public. Today it is widely viewed as a malevolent, hostile, even dangerous organization.

These things are largely a matter of political will…more so than they are a matter of law. The general political attitude toward religion (at least in America) is quite a bit less friendly today than it was in the early 90’s. And the attitude towards taxation has shifted greatly also.

People in law enforcement and quasi-law enforcement agencies like the IRS have long organizational memories. There are still people there looking for a little payback. They most likely will not be fooled again…and if threats, intimidation, spying and other crap against IRS employees starts up again I would expect fast and wide scale arrests. Those arrests will be timed and orchestrated for MAXIMUM publicity effect.

But until there is a renewed effort in Congress, the Justice Department or directly from the IRS, nothing will happen.

There will NOT be a successful replay of the Scientology shenanigans from before if one of the above organizations begin some sort of action.

New shenanigans may be attempted…but until we see them, it is impossible to predict what might happen.

    • dagobarbz

I wrote that same thought a few years ago. The US. Government took no precautions for a future attack of this nature. They didn’t do a goddam thing to prevent it. And I recall some dwarf saying they were ready to do it again if necessary.

      • These days they don’t have as many peons to piss with.

Humph. You’d think the IRS would have taken precautions against that kind of DDOS attack.

    • AintMizBahavin

The fact that since then the irs has revamped itself and is run by idiots with balls. also the documented abuses of lyingtology would prove very fatal for them. and i know for a fact when the irs hires now they do extensive background checks unlike 65 years ago. they dig into your life from the time you were born until now. i know because 2 of my brothers work for them unfortunately for my family. this time around it would beyond very hard for cos to get any of their workers up in there to rifle files , destroy evidence , or get anything black mailing against the irs and if certain people are to be believed the irs knows more about the militant midget and what he’s been up to then he knows about them now…beginning with something called the cloning center
