One Scientologist is out to teach HBO a lesson for its upcoming documentary

Myles Binford

Myles Binford

The last time we checked in on Myles Binford, the Orange County, California businessman was organizing a running race in order to benefit a couple of Scientology’s front groups.

Binford is an OT 8 — the highest step on the Bridge to Total Freedom is Operating Thetan Level Eight, and the people who have completed it should be able to affect matter with their minds and fly around outside their bodies and all sorts of other superhuman stuff, but they are always too modest to show those abilities, for some reason.

Before he had organized the race, Binford had also founded a Scientology-based drug rehab facility in Dana Point called Pur Detox.

But what has Myles hopping mad these days is the news that HBO and filmmaker Alex Gibney teamed up for a full-length documentary on Scientology which will debut next month at the Sundance Film Festival and then, presumably, air on HBO itself and reach a massive audience. Imagine all the questions a guy like Myles is going to get from people after they see a two-hour movie about the way Scientology rips apart families, forced abortions on women for decades, hunts down and tries to destroy former members and others who speak out about its abuses, and is well documented to partake in other toxic practices.

But Myles isn’t taking it lying down! A couple of our tipsters spotted these tweets about how Binford is going to start a boycott that HBO is soon going to regret!

Something tells us HBO isn’t going to be intimidated by this, Myles. We look forward to your Plan B.

Scientology’s 2014 in review: September’s surprise visitor to the Bunker

Jim Jackson

Jim Jackson

Just a few more days left as we finish out 2014 by looking back at the most significant stories we covered here at the Underground Bunker.

One of the recurring themes of 2014 was how much effort Simpsons star Nancy Cartwright has been putting into raising funds from her fellow Scientologists in order to renovate an ugly building in North Hollywood.

Her efforts have been relentless, and in September, she produced the creepiest Scientology advertisement of all time.

On the 4th, we had correspondents in the courtroom as a hearing was held in the Garcia lawsuit in Tampa federal court. We thought Judge James D. Whittemore might make a ruling that day, but here we’re still waiting for a ruling in Scientology’s arbitration motion, and another hearing on the same matter has been scheduled for February 18.

On the 9th, one of the biggest scoops of the year: The Bunker posted a message from longtime Scientologist Jim Jackson, who wrote in tribute to Lyman Spurlock, a church official who had recently died. Jackson was at one time L. Ron Hubbard’s CPA, and was only recently “declared a suppressive person” — or excommunicated by the church. He’s a pretty towering figure in the “independent” Scientology community, so his message appearing at the Bunker really spread shockwaves throughout the Scientology watching world. We sure appreciate Jim sharing his thoughts with us, and we look forward to hearing from again. (A little birdie tells us Jim may show up in a certain Florida publication about a week into the new year.)

On September 11, we made public that a 2010 patient death at a Narconon drug rehab center had resulted in a state investigation, but the facility was able to satisfy state regulators with some simple bureaucratic changes.

On September 16, we posted a leaked transcript from a speech given to Scientologists at a Los Angeles gathering, where they were told that the church has received more than $5 million in grants from Google.

Four days later, we had a story revealing that Scientologists had infiltrated a weekend conference being held at a high school in Los Angeles. After our story appeared, we noticed that the Scientologists were removed from the conference program.

On September 23, on of the biggest legal defeats for the church this year: An Oklahoma judge decided that families suing Narconon Arrowhead over patient deaths should get access to a suppressed state investigation that found wrongdoing at the facility and recommended that it be shut down.

A LOOK BACK AT SEPTEMBER 2013: Scientology’s private dancer, live-blogging at the Monique Rathbun temporary restraining order hearing, and day two’s live-blog which still has the record number of comments for a single blog post at the Bunker (3,442).
