There is too much to read in all the news about Scientology. Everyday it seems that more anti Scientology press is released and new anti-Scientology groups formed. I am having a difficult time trying to keep up with it all. It used to be that I could read and digest all of the news about Scientology in a few minutes but now it is taking hours out of my life. OSA must really have some down statistics for all of this to be occurring. As Mike Rinder likes to say...It really sucks to be David Miscavige.

Good read. My only criticism is your comparison of the Hempstocks to Thetans, on the shaky ground that both are "immortal". Gaiman readers surely quickly recognized the Hempstocks as Hecate, who prominently featured in The Sandman in the form of a maiden, mother, and crone. I think she appears in American Gods as well, but it's been a while.

Ok, so, according to this article, Scientology invented reincarnation (and the notion that you cannot remember past lives), and greek mythic figures Parcae (who appear in almost every fucking Neil Gaiman book, starting from Sandman) are actually Thetans... You americans think you know everything, don't you?

So if not a Scientology, then Gaiman is certainly a gutless coward and enabler of a vile organization, simply because he's afraid of a couple relatives/friends not liking him anymore.
That kind of seems even worse, doesn't it??

Just a couple of things from someone who appreciates Gaiman as a writer.

The assertion that the three Hempstock women would be in any way connected to Scientologist mythology is a serious misreading as they obviously represent the female goddess worshipped by some pre-Christian populations and which three aspects represent the three phases of female life: maiden, mother and crone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_deity#Triple_goddesses http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_Goddess_(Neopaganism) This is not a long shot at ALL as this idea has been inspiring other fantasy writers such as Terry Pratchett, whose witches are made of the same material. Gaiman has long worked with myth and legend (Sandman, American Gods, Anansi Boys, you name it) and does not need to lean on a subpar sci-fi writer such as LRH for ideas.

And also:

>>In a strange way, it’s as if Neil Gaiman, in his novel, is providing support for his father’s real-life assertion that the suicide, Scheepers, had died because of gambling, and not because of his involvement with Scientology.

Gaiman, who is a writer weaving a fictional narrative about something that happened when he was little, is not substantiating any claims about anything made by anyone. Plus, in the book the suicide is clearly portrayed as an event that is dark and upsetting and allows evil to slip into the real world, so this claim is very strange and definitely void. I hope with all my heart that the suicide was looked into properly as it would not be the first time that Scientology's horrible machinations hurt people, but Gaiman is most definitely not making any kind of statement about the real suicide of a real person.

Thanks for the interesting read, but please make sure you know where your implications are leading you - Scientology thrives on misinformation.

This isn't the exorcism.
For that, you have to find "Other People" from one of the short story collections.
The devil's torture sounds a lot like "problems release".
